SINGAPORE: Singapore's former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has said that the country is well-placed to ride on China's growth.

And while Singaporeans have a distinct advantage given their ability to read, write and speak both English and Mandarin, it does not mean they fully understand the Chinese culture.

Speaking at the Business China Awards on Wednesday night, Mr Lee said no two countries share the same culture.

He cited his own experience in learning from his foray into Suzhou and Tianjin.

Mr Lee said Singaporeans are westernised but the Chinese are not, but by being bicultural, Singapore, he noted, can reach deeper inside China to understand its growth story.

Mr Lee said: "For us we follow the rule of law. For them, an agremeent is the beginning of a long friendship in which we make adjustments as we go along.

"Considering what is fair, and that makes for a misunderstanding at the beginning but we soon adjusted and we realise that in China, we do business the Chinese way which means we sign an agreement and it's the beginning of a long friendship."

Mr Lee added that as a result of China's expansion, there will be a greater demand for bilingual and bicultural talents.

He said Business China's definitive role as an accelerator for grooming the bilingual and bicultural of Singaporeans will serve as a catalytic platform to meet this demand.

Business China was launched in November 2007 by then Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Its mission is to nurture bilingual and bi-cultural Singaporeans to develop a cultural and economic bridge with China.

The annual Business China Awards recognises outstanding businessmen and organisations for their contributions in strengthening Singapore-China relations.

This year's winners are Professor Arthur Lim Siew Ming, founding medical director at the Singapore National Eye Centre (who won the Business China Excellence Award), CapitaLand Group (which won the Business China Enterprise Award), and Dr Loh Cheng, residency training coordinator at Kunming's Medical University 2nd Affiliated Hospital (who won the Business China Young Achiever Award).

You're so kind and civil to address him as Mr.

Most including me refer to him as Old Fart!

This place is infested with so many prostitutes and dogs.

That's why sinkapore will kowtow to China on all issues. The SMRT strike by the Chinese drivers shows how afraid sinkees are of the Chinese; instead of being harsh, the SMRT management had to admit that they were wrong to address the issues expeditiously. The minister has pushed the issue into the future, believing that sinkees will forget about it. The PAP government won't dare to treat the Chinese workers harshly for fear of retribution.

Sinkapore is as good as part of China ...that's a fact that sinkees have to accept. Eventually, half the population of Sinkapore will be PRC nationals.

Why can't they just refer to him as the MP for Tg Pagar?
All this high faluting shit is killing me.

There are (unsubstantiated) rumours that China may be secretly planning and funding a project in Thailand to build a canal that allows ships to bypass the Straits of Malacca. If/when that canal becomes a reality, Singapore is fucked.

Dumb fuck. It is common practice for media to address someone this way. If you do a search for Bill Clinton for example, the article is more likely that not address him as Former President Bill Clinton.

that's the Kra Canal..they've talking about it for years....go google it....the latest plan is now to sail through the melting ice via the North Pole...either way, Singapore is still fucked....

Kra canal have been discuss for more than 50 year. And will never take off because construction cost and land acquisition very costly. Estimate for construction cost only will be US$30b and take 10~15 year and calculate the interest for 10 year total cost will balloon to US$50b. Toll for the ship will not able to cover the cost.

The only way is built refinery in Thailand, off load raw oil in West of the Kra and use pipe to transfer to East Kra and process it and load onto ship . Then Jurong Island will be useless.
