The whole weight of the PAP and the Prime Minister bore down on Low Thia Khiang in Parliament. Hsien Loong gave him a lashing in the most ‘constructive’ way after this term was made famous by Tony Tan in his Presidential Address. Hsien Loong could not make it any more constructive than what he did to Low Thia Khiang. This shaken Low’s confidence for a brief moment but he recomposed himself and stood there bravely to rebut everything Hsien Loong threw at him. He would not let any unwarranted remarks go unanswered and he took his time to rebut every one of them, not missing any.

Low Thia Khiang has shown his mettle expected of an opposition leader. He was not going to buckle under the spotlight. He held his ground and even Hsien Loong had to turn on a little smile on and off from his lecturing posture. Mind you, you had a Cambridge trained scholar speaking in his ‘mother tongue’ Queens English that he was most comfortable with and with a full vocabulary of choiced words in his finger tips. On the other side of the bench was a Chinese educated Nantah graduate, born and bred in Teochew and Mandarin but retorting in English, a language that was as good as alien to him. Low Thia Khiang not only spoke well and in good grammatically correct English, he fought back like a tiger. Imagine if the debate were to be conducted in Mandarin, the result would be quite different even though Hsien Loong is also a Mandarin speaker. Maybe next time Low Thia Khiang shall speak in Mandarin when taking on Hsien Loong (or anyone in Parliament) and let Hsien Loong have the choice to reply in English or Mandarin.

I think many who have glued to the TV to watch the drama would have stood up and gave him a standing ovation. Despite all the handicaps, underrepresented, 7 against 80, despite having to struggle with an alien language, despite having only limited resources, and in the face of a hostile and cynical dominant party whose candidates have occupied Parliament like their familiar living room, Low Thia Khiang stood tall, alone to face them. He did himself proud, did his party proud. And I am sure many of the PAP MPs must be quietly admiringly the way Low ‘articulated’ his positions without any fumble.

Many who watched the debate are giving Low Thia Khiang the nod as a worthy opposition leader in Parliament. His performance was a good example for his MPs to emulate and must have shown them that that’s the way to stand up against the hostile stares of intimidating opponents without having to give an inch, like a tiger. At least that was the impression Hsien Loong had of the WP leaders, turning into tigers and heroes. When your worthy opponents like the mighty PAP acknowledged your worthiness, you deserved it.

Don't quite agree with the assessment. No doubt the setting in parliament is not to LTK's advantage, I have the confident that he can do better. Why he is holding back only he will know.

Agreed that the PM came across as a ranting tigress bitch while LTK stood his ground like a raccoon, who can give a nasty bite.

And this despite that LTK was not speaking in his better tongue. Next time, LTK should speak in both Mandarin and English in rebuttal. I bet you that LHL wll be stammering and stuttering in mandarin. Of course he can also use Russian..

he promised the old lion that he would spar with gloves on with his cub in the gladiator pit, but his cub could use its bare-fisted claws on him. the sparring partner is not supposed to knock out the champion boxer during practice. :p

LHL cant stand up to a proper debate and quick in pugnacity at his adversary. The National Conversation was staged with all PA members in the audience mockup for him to be comfortable.

The pappies are super thick-skinned, buay paiseh, they probably won't be affected by lau kwee.

Thick-skinned until can spin it as 'we've made great progress over the last three years'. LOL! :D

Given that sort of David vs Goliath ad hoc situation, LTK need to be extremely careful in his rebuttal.
The MIW will pin point mistakes and keep harping on LTK if he get his facts wrong.
LTK has been trying hard not to repeat and make the similar serious mistakes as what CSJ and JBJ did in their parliament debate.

They can try Teochew or even Hakka....can start with " dieu ai see futt"... ha ha ha

Not quite sure why LTK has to pick a subject such as “constructive politic” to debate in the Parliament. He is not a lawyer.. even if he has picked up substantial debating skills over the year being an opposition leader, “constructive politic” is still one subject that reads loud and clear is the subject that teach people how to be a good politician; it is akin to telling people how to be a good man.

Yes. It is a good topic in a sense to enter into a series of arguments that will never end until one party started to “hoot” the other party hard hard and the other party being "hooted" retreated by boycotting the parliament sessions. This happened so many times before.

There lying in front of us is an interesting subject about CPF that has been lying there for almost 6 years. All LTK need to ask in the Parliament is why other Provident Funds can get higher interest rate and why we cannot all these years? Sure he would have all the listeners. Is it too late? Thought Parliament debate is always above the law.

LTK did mention that different WP MPs will speak on different topics. I guess sometimes, confirmation of this is needed.

In the end, 2 WP MPs have broached on CPF.

Many are paid to pick up mistakes made by the opposition. It's their rice bowl. MIW is solidly backed by the entire civil service.

Yes. CPF interest rate was mentioned twice in Mr. Png's speech. one remark on CPF remaining same over 15 years; the other on the formula of SMRA. Yes. One cannot any how speak without supporting evidences and confirmations.. lets see if some can suddenly find it after so many years...By the time they found out, game over liao. PAP MP already all come out to say CPF interest rate too low.. no need oppositions' help

LTK is good in tai chi with his political opponents. It is difficult to pin him down. He knows when to speak, when not to speak. During GE2011 when LKY tried to drag LTK into a debate on a certain issue, and may be to trap LTK into making some kind of scandalous remarks against him, LTK in a rally merely referred to LKY's challenge as a "lau ah por" making noises.

A smart way to walk away from a trap and possibly a legal suit. There is no doubt LTK is smart and able to do well as a political leader.

That is where majority of those 60.1% came from.
No MIW = No rice bowl for them.

Not really true. There were many in the civil service who supported oppo parties. The civil service will always be there, no matter who runs the Govt.

When you are a leader of a political party with 8 MPs and have to debate in Parliament with the PM, the leader of more than 80 MPs, it is a formidable challenge. LTK performed well and responded to the PM like a true opposition leader. No firework or rhetoric. Seems that wherever he stands in any constituency, the pappies will lose in that constituency in any GE. He did it in Hougang and Aljunied GRC.

Not really true LTK will win if he stand in any constituency.
Let's see if he will try AMK GRC in the next GE.

Not really true.
Some of the MP, civil service departments and GLCs can be made redundant.
Do we really need to have those MP without portfolio in PMO, "Tema the sick "with cry baby LBH to invest your $$$,
tooth pick obsessed LSS doing nothing, WCS who still draw millions etc?
All these jokers are around because of the current ruling party.
