Armed police and a helicopter have been deployed to a house in Brussels. At least one armed man is believed to be inside, according to local media.
The incident is taking place near a primary school in the municipality of Forest, on Rue Jean-Baptiste Vanpe. The school is attended by approximately 350 pupils, and the children have been taken inside as a safety precaution. The mayor of Forest, Marc-Jean Ghyssels, has also confirmed the police operation, citing "suspicion of the presence of armed men," RTBF reported.

A security perimeter has been established, with a witness telling RTL Info that police have ordered residents of the neighborhood to stay inside their homes.

Witnesses told RTBF that armed police and snipers are at the scene. Police helicopters are also flying above the area.

Police lock down part of Brussels amid reports of gunman

By Associated Press February 22 at 8:16 AM

BRUSSELS — Belgian police have sealed off part of a Brussels suburb amid media reports that an armed man could be at large.

Associated Press television images Thursday showed armed police officers hiding behind buildings and staking out a building rooftop in the Forest neighborhood of the Belgian capital.

A police helicopter flew overhead.

Broadcaster RTL quoted Forest mayor Marc-Jean Ghyssels as saying that police “suspect the presence of an armed man.”

A suspect in the deadly Paris attacks in November 2015, Salah Abdeslam, hid in Forest and was caught up in a shootout with police in a nearby apartment.

There was no immediate indication that Thursday’s incident is terror-related.

Brussels: Armed police and helicopters are at the scene in Forest
The Forest area was the scene of a shootout between terror police hunting for the and Paris attack suspect Salah Abdeslam.

The Belgian-born of Moroccan descent was thought to be staying in a flat there and when police raided the presumed empty flat they were ambushed by his accomplice Mohamed Belkaid.

He fired explosives at police to distract from a rooftop getaway of another accomplice. In the November 2015 Paris attacks 130 people were killed in a series of strikes including the Bataclan theatre.

A police spokesman said a Polish man had raised the alert
A police spokeswoman denied media reports that an armed gunman was hiding in the area. She said that the special units of the federal police had been deployed after a Polish man reported that someone had been murdered in the morning.

She said: ”They are searching the buildings but we can say there has not been any terrorist attack.”

Around 350 students at a nearby school, École Sainte-Alène de Forest, were hurried inside from their lunch break upon hearing the news.

The headmaster told RTL the children would remain in the school.
