According to http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/394214/1/.html, Labour chief says “Our message is – give priority to the local workers (and not retrench as a first resort).”
Please note that he is ‘urging’ employers, rather than enacting policy to ensure Singaporeans get retrenched only after foreigners.
How effective is ‘urging’, I ask you? Companies can actually save some money by retaining foreigners (because employers don’t have to contribute to their CPF). If a company can save some money, of course they should fire Singaporeans first, right?
Rather than ‘urging’ local companies to retain locals during retrenchments, I suggest that it is now high time to enact policies like those ‘hire-Australians-1st’ policies Down Under.
Come on Labour chief, time to really fight for Singaporean workers.

Some while ago, he had an urge to cry for the China Mei Mei!. I have an urge to puke, each time I glance at his face!

I don't like his hairstyle. Too wet and long. Sloppy hairstyle for a minister.

this limswaysway is in fact a very compassionte person.he cries easily and he feels very strongly for the workers.so he urges all employers not to retrench but to restructure and keep the workers.but he confesses he feels very rich every month when he receives his cpf satements.he is very rich.so he urges employers not to retrench.he is a good man.always cries and sobs.his tears can move heaven and earth.a man who cries easily is a very strong person.well done limswaysway.

He must be one of the opponent to the Goh Chok Torng school who insist that " If I don't see retrenchment, it woud be bad for Singapore."

"If I don't feel rich every month I'll be very worried for Singapore..."

High salaries, high bonuses, high allowances, high pensions, high everything...of course " I feel so happy every month...I feel so rich...."

How many of us feel rich every month!!! Look at all the high bills!!! Look at all the over-draft and over-drawn statements!!! Look at all the mortgage loans!!! Look at all the credit card invoices!!! KNN! How to feel rich and happy!!!!

If the govt is sincere in helping S'poreans, it should instruct MOM to tweak the locals vs foreigners ratio by increasing the locals to foreigners ratio. So when companies retrench, they have to meet the new ratio and in order to comply with this new ratio, companies will have no choice but to retrench foreigners first.

BTW, PRs should be reclassifed as foreigners in this new ratio. That will be a win win for companies as they will have a bit more leeway in conducting their retrenchment exercise.
