Light sentence for doctor guilty of molest

by nurbaiti hamdan

SHAH ALAM: A medical doctor who was found guilty of molesting his patient received a light sentence when a magistrate's court here imposed him with a three-year good behaviour bond.

Magistrate Nor Kamilah Aziz found Dr. Wan Azman Wan Adnan, 56, guilty of molesting his then 22-year-old patient by touching her vagina and inserting his finger in her anus at a clinic in Seksyen 7 here on July 17, 2010.

"After going through the defence case, the court is satisfied that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt," said the magistrate on Thursday.

The court also fixed a RM2,500 deposit with two sureties.

DPP Noor Husnita Mohd Radzi earlier argued for a heavier sentence based on the gravity of the offence.

"The victim was his patient who came to him to seek treatment," she said.

In mitigation lawyer Dir Kheizwan Kamaruddin pleaded that imprisonment would bring a detrimental impact on his client.

"He is now a lecturer teaching medicine. My client has two children from a previous marriage and three children from his current marriage.

"He has a history of mental illness (affective disorder) that caused the collapse of his first marriage.

"This conviction will affect his career and probably cost him his job. He also suffers from chronic diabetes," Dir Kheizwan said prior to sentencing.

DPP Noor Husnita told reporters that the prosecution would appeal against the sentence.
