The next time you board a bus, the driver may just greet you with a cheerful "goeie more" (pronounced ho-yah mo-ra).

That would be Mr Daniel Jacobus Ellis wishing you "good morning" in his native Afrikaans, one of the 11 official languages of South Africa.

The 34-year-old started his training to be a bus captain in February and has been driving with SBS Transit since April this year.

He is the only Caucasian employed by the company as a bus captain, and he is believed to be the only bus captain here from the African nation.

SBS Transit has about 5,800 bus captains.

Mr Ellis said he has previously worked as a freelance business analyst here, but turned to the bus company for a stable job.

"I saw an ad at the LRT station advertising positions for bus captains, and I thought to myself, 'Why not give it a try?'" he said.

    5.8k

Number of bus captains employed by SBS Transit, and Mr Ellis is the only Caucasian.

Mr Ellis - who moved to Singapore in 2011 when he married his Singaporean wife - gained his citizenship two years ago, becoming one of 20,815 to do so that year.

He said that he considers himself a Singaporean.

Home is a four-room Build-To-Order Housing Board flat in Punggol where he lives with his wife, a school counsellor.

To keep himself alert during his 12-hour-long shifts - which can see him start the day as early as 2.45am - he enjoys a cup of kopi gao (thick coffee) from the Hougang Central Bus Interchange canteen.

That is where he starts his daily route driving bus service 27.

Mr Lee Teck Chuan, the interchange manager, said that Mr Ellis projects "a very professional image" and has received positive feedback both from commuters as well as his co-workers.

One commuter, who wanted to be identified only as Madam Tan, said she was initially surprised to see a Caucasian driving the bus.

"He is very polite and courteous," she said.

While driving a bus is a "generally thankless" job, Mr Ellis said he is sometimes surprised by the generosity of the commuters he encounters.

Mr Ellis, who is Muslim, said he once received a packet of rice porridge from a commuter while he was driving during the fasting month of Ramadan this June.

He said he has become more of a "people person" since taking on the job. Sometimes, commuters approach him while he is driving to talk about their day, he said.

    "It's a very pleasant thing."

Born in South Africa, Mr Ellis came to Singapore in 2009 to meet a local girl that he had been communicating with online.

The two married in 2011 and he became a Singapore citizen two years ago.

(Mr Ellis married Ilyana in 2011.)

Mr Ellis recounted how impressed he was by the friendly culture here and the ease of getting around, especially with English being the main language. And when he got married, the decision to move here was an easy one.

“I wanted to live in the East, but the main reason is I wanted to be here to build my life with my wife.

“The understanding was that we will either settle here or in South Africa, but the preference was Singapore. And of course it’s a really nice country to live in, truly,” he said.

This meant giving up his South African citizenship, but he said his heritage will always be a part of him. “You can’t take that away,” he said.

    ...

Mr Ellis belongs to an evolving ‘Others’ category, which makes up 3.2 per cent of the total resident population. This mix of ‘Others’ has changed quite dramatically over the years.

In 2000, Eurasians topped the list, followed by Caucasians and then Arabs. Today, the top three are Filipinos, Caucasians and an ‘Others’ within ‘Others’ category – a mix bag of ethnicities which could include Vietnamese, Myanmarese and Africans.

The proportion of Eurasians has halved to 13 per cent, just under 17,000 Eurasians.

Sizeable Jewish population in S. Africa, largest in Africa. Mainly in Cape Town & Johannesburg. Earliest settlers came with the Dutch East India Company. Early 1900s settlers were Lithuanian Jews escaping pogroms.

Long before J.M. Coetzee, there was the Jewish Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer, who helped bring the plight of the black population to the world's attention through her writing and her anti-apartheid activism.

It's complex, really. Like Jewish communities in the Americas, most were fleeing the pogroms in eastern Europe or, later, the Nazis. Wherever they found a welcoming place, they sank roots. But more often than not, they also face anti-Semitism in their new homes.

The Jews went through a long period in S. Africa where they were treated as outcasts. Some intermarried with the Boers (Boer Jews) and became accepted as 'whites' but many were caught in no-man's land: not as badly treated as the blacks, but denied many of the privileges of the whites. Those who sent money back to the new state of Israel were called Zionist traitors. As with Jews everywhere, money often helped them overcome some of these barriers by greasing the palms of the ruling class.

Like in America where Jews were involved in the civil rights movement right from the start, many prominent Jews also helped in the anti-apartheid movement. Like in America, there are also many Jews directly or indirectly involved in aiding the oppression of the blacks and coloureds.

EP rule: If a person looks like a mud, fucks like a mud, and prays like a mud, then he's a mud. Confirmed and chopped.

The Jews were in Mandela's core team that fought and overthrew apartheid. Rivonia where Mandela and his co-conspirators plotted was bought by Jewish activists for the cause. The raid at Rivonia by the apartheid regime led to Mandela and his co-conspirators long incarceration and that included the father of South Africa's 2nd President.

The surname Ellis is prominent and common in SA. Ellis Park is world famous venue for Rugby whwre Nelson Mandela famously wore the Boers colours and lifted the 95 Rugby World Cup, its first major sporting win after the lifting of the World wide blockade of SA and it united a broken nation.

Yes, we should be honoured that we an have Ellis in our midst driving our buses and being a Singaporean. These are the people that we need. Give us a couple more of Ellises than PRCs who go on strike or some India Indian bimbo whose nose is in the air and thinks her heavily accented English is an achievement in itself.

By the way, in this last week, the press have been clearly directed to write-up on mixed marriages for the sake of PAP's Halimah.

Khan is DKP, Marican is DKK. Chances are they won't qualify. Likely walkover.

Malays have always been colour blind and that's the reason why Indian Muslims and Arabs in particular take advantage of them on both sides of the causeway.
