ASIA'S richest man Li Ka Shing has compared the two cities of Hong Kong and Singapore, saying that Singapore - spurred by its lack of resources - has relentlessly sought to reinvent and upgrade itself.

By contrast, Hong Kong is "like a spoilt child", with populism on the rise.

It has to step up its game and sharpen its competitive edge, said the 85-year-old property tycoon.

In an interview with mainland Chinese news website Caixin published on Thursday, Mr Li outlined what he thinks are the differences between the two cities - traditionally pitted as rivals - when responding to a question on how Hong Kong should encourage innovation.

Singapore also has anti foreigner sentiment and populism. Doesn't Li kah Shing know?

I am surprised LKS made that observation. Hongkies are known to be survivors and not led by the ears. They are also a resilient bunch.

I am sure the South Asians in HK would never dared to stir up trouble including flipping over police cars, destroy public assets etc.

surface only, if he goes deeper he'll find SG hell with our Pay and Pay gahmen mercilessly

Talk cock la...Sg if so good ask him vote with feet not wayang here kpkb

I agree.

The Honkies are more resourceful, entrepreneurial,

but the gov is in cahoots with property tycoons to prevent the use of "eminent domain" to seize land for urban development, especially housing. hk, especially the new territories, has more land than sg for easing the urban congestion on tiny strips in kowloon and hk island. sg should be credited for having a decisive and powerful gov to take land away from idiots and vested interest, developing them into decent pigeon holes away from the urban core, redistributing population, creating new towns, opening up opportunities for small enterprises, food vendors and boutique shops, and reaching out to these new abodes with a massive cohesive transport system including the world's highly admired mass rapid transit, roadways, electronic tolls, ample parking, and an entire eco-system of infrastructure to support the movement of sinkies and shit. sg has an extremely long term multi-year plan, while hk is held to ransom by a cowardice, compliant gov (to the prc) and her bevy of self-serving real estate tycoons who prefer to tightly control the supply of land to increase their own worth and screw the masses.

granted sg has her real estate tycoons too, and they too profit from gov policies on land use, population increase and urban development, but the gov has final say in "eminent domain" issues, and the sg gov ultimately prevails in turning under-utilized land for the public good. there are pros and cons, good and bad, great achievements and mistakes, but sg has done a fantastic job considering all the challenges, premature ejaculations and shortcummings.

kudos to the pap gov for a job well done! at the end of all analysis-paralysis, they have earned my confidence. :D

except that the SG govt's policy of "asset enhancement" has caused much pain, such as super high rents, increasing the price of food, and necessities.

"pain" is a relative term often used by the disenfranchised to further their cause of perceived inequity. ask any disenfranchised hongkongers if they are willing to relocate to sg with relocation cost paid and temporal housing made available, there will be crazy stampede at the doors. the disenfranchised in hk are convinced sg has a far better model of equity and opportunity. and for hk's elite of elites lks to chime the same tune with the disenfranchised, it's a no brainer to conclude that sg is doing something right.

OK,
I have been away too long, and not close to the ground to say that SG is bad, pain or no pain

i'm simply doing an unpaid duty of defending sg and her policies on sbf, as the paid pap ib have been woeful in their duties akin to the lackluster performance of their home team. :D

You are brave and honourable.
I was brave, only when I was with the SAF.
Fellow officers and my men would refer to me as "Tan Chiak"

Good? He would not be this rich if he's in Sinkieland. How close is he to the famiLEE?
