Dear Mr Balakrishnan,

I am touched by your statement on how Dr Lim Hock Siew inspired and influenced you to join politics, as well as your cordial friendship with him over the past 24 years. Lim Hock Siew was a good and honourable man. But more than that, he was a patriot. A patriot who never wavered in his belief that all men should be treated fair and equal. For his peaceful activities, however, he was incarcerated for over 20 years, missing out
the prime of his life and the times he could have spent with his growing son and wife.

Agreeing to disagree is gracious behaviour expected in a democracy. Yet, one thing we must all defend in a democracy is another person's entitlement to his or her rights, even if we strongly disagreed with them. Dr Lim's sacrifices were not brought upon him through any fault of his own. Rather, they were brought about through the abuses of the ISA, which, decade after decade in Singapore's history, has been used to silence and intimidate political opponents and dissent.

Even after all he's been through, he was still willing to forgive his oppressors and had no feeling of bitterness to them. I can especially relate to this, as a Christian, as Jesus has taught us to "love your enemies". Indeed, here was a good and honourable man worthy of our respect. But merely singing Dr Lim's praises is not enough; Dr Lim wouldn't have wanted this. We must, sooner than later, address the issue of the injustices caused by a law which has no place in a just and equal society. We must not be silent on this grave issue, as to do so would only affirm that Dr Lim deserved all that he went through. Regardless of whether we are in the ruling party or opposition, this is an issue which we all have to stand united on. For it isn't about partisanship or the disagreement of policies anymore, this has to do with our very own morality.

Last Saturday, I attended an event at Speakers' Corner calling for the abolishment of the ISA. Dr Lim Hock Siew wasn't the only one unjustly incarcerated, plenty of others were, too. We, as sons of this country, all have a part to play in reconciling these detainees and removing the ISA, so that we may yet dream again of a more caring and just society which respects the dignity and rights of every person for future generations to come. Thank you and God bless you.

The use of ISA is now more relevant than ever with islamic terrorists around. Dozens of these terrorists were arrested right here in Singapore my dear.
We don't want any bombings and air crashes in Singapore. Lets keep ISA around.

We can have a different set of laws against terrorists and tailored to them but ISA is a catch-all and many political dissenters have been targeted. That is non-democratic. Singapore's human rights global ranking suffers because of this and because of the political system. Deep down his heart LKY should know that it could only be for short term self interest of the PAP but not for the long term interest of the nation.

Agreed so that when your Lau Lee up lorry and PAP lose power, we can round up all PAP dogs like u..and detain all of you indefinitely... :oIo:

Agree. We definitely need a new set of anti-terrorism laws. But there's absolutely no place today for the ISA, not when it has deviated from its original aim of containing communism and has long been abused by the authorities to oppress and incarcerate political dissidents.

If he was indeed inspired by Dr Lim, he wouldn't be in PAP today. He should shoulder the mantle of Opposition on the other side. VB is simply a hypocrite, a hollow man, and a fraud.

What different laws are you suggesting? do you know ISA in the first place?

Agree. We definitely need a new set of anti-terrorism laws.

Old wine in a new bottle?

Who than define a terrorist as one?

That prerogative lies with the political office of Home Affairs?

Let's not allow politicians hide under the secrecy act.

Since, even the twin tower bombing in US is till shrouded with mysteries and far too many questions unexplained. All facts point to missile attack than suicide squads with huge aeroplanes ramming right through it.Which paved a path for US to invade Afghanistan,Iraq and now perhaps Iran.

All for what?So that politicians will remain in politics lying thorough their teeth.

Let's do away with all these dirty laws. And put everyone under the scrutiny of the public by open trials.

Open trials for terrorists? With counter terrorism efforts in the open? How silly and naive of you?

Kenneth Lin if you are reading this I just want to thank you for writing this so elequontly. This appreciation is from a 50 year old man to you a young chap just like the 17 year old boy who like you had written sensibly in his blog venting his frustrations from TCH's seminar. Our country belongs to you and the kind of you who dare to speak and show, this country now has hope.

With regards to your letter to VB, I have one thing to say and that is this man is hopeless. Why? Even his own father refused to speak to him for a long period of time because the son had betrayed the family's faith with is also your faith when son supported the casinos to be build in our land. I am not arguing about the evil of gambling now but showing how a person could turn into a serpent and betray the religion, the father and of course friends.

Some people are so evil and it takes a miracle to change but I guess it has to take a really big miracle like sickness or retribution that is as big as his paycheck to change. I encourage you to write and be active in the fight against ISA. Don't waste too much of your time on VB.

Even if it is the case of a suspected terrorist, that suspect should be charged in court and be properly convicted and sentenced, not just locked up indefinitely.

Nobody should be locked up based on a hunch or whim of someone else.

Bro Kingrant,
the last 3 adjectives too harsh...
imho, when the moment of truth arrived, he realized his courage cannot match his ideals.

For sure, when he persuaded himself to be INSIDE PAP, instead of outside, mind you, he has had the counsel of his mentor, Arthur - himself buddies with the FAJAR gang and scion of lawyer-politician Lim Chuan Hoh.

Arthur Lim, even Scroobal concedes in old threads, is an untouchable, even by LKY. For all his dark side, he never forgets the role Lim plays in turning over Chew Swee Kee's CIA bribe to Lee & PAP then in Opposition.

Vivian must have thought working from within is wiser - for establishment to evolve rather than for instability to rein through direct challenge and revolution.

Alas, either he realized a lot of hard truths once in the inner circle - truths that this govt thinks the peasants are too dumb to know - or he realized he lacks the political nous & savviness to win support and influence people within the party. Or he simply sold out and just serve time for riches - money he can surely make if he had stayed as a respected medical professional in his eye specialization field.

Whichever the truth,
imho, to use words like 'hypocrite, hollow, fraud' on him is too easy and simplistic.

Dear Kenneth, be careful, please remember what happened to Jamie Han.

kindly ask yr pappy masters to first come clean on the mas selamat kestari fiasco...than perhaps u can blow yr horn...we r still waiting to hear the real truth

I actually like how Kenneth called him Mr. B and not Dr. B. Demotes his medical profession.

Not wiser, he probably thot it wld be EASIER. Pull some strings, lean against some mountain..

But no Ah Neh even a half one, will ever become PM, so that must be his first hard truth.

He typically personifies the old adage of a riddle: "If you see an Indian and a cobra in the jungle, which do you shoot first?"
