It is shocking to hear that our small island republic has hit a population of 5 over million and still growing.
These small nation is not meant to hold such a collasal figure of 5 miliion plus.
With human expansion, comes more cars on the roads, overloaded buses and trains.
Moving around Singapore becomes a very difficult thing - be it at the wheel or being stuffed like sardines in public transport.
We were in the past blessed with many off-shore islands where many people use to reside. Sadly many of these iddylic isles have been reclaimed with sand and formed into a big island (Jurong). This too is a restricted island where certain types of industries are situated.
I am told that far-flung St John's, Lazarus and Sisters Islands are ear-marked for development projects for the filthy rich and famous. Not for poor peasants like us...
Closer to us was Pulau Tekong. This too has become an army training area.
and hence Restricted too.
This leaves us with Pulau Hantu and Ubin.
May I suggest, that un-employed senior citizens, who are currently leading a "stuffy" existence in mainland Singapore be allowed (just like the rich and famous) to purchase a small peice of land on lease-hold (say 10 years for a start) and allowed to reside on Pulau Ubin and Pulau Hantu.
The advantages are many:-
Firstly, the very presence of such people on these islands would become a deterence for illegal immigrants to land there.
Secondly, the senior citizens can lead a life on the islands away from the hustle and bustle of mainland Singapore.
Thirdly, the open and wooded area will contribute to their good health, and
Finally, their children and grandchildren can pay them a visit on week-ends and the bond between the family can be further strengthened. Living togather with children can at times lead to misunderstandings. "Lebih Jauh Lebih Baik" - The Further The Better. Like the saying, "Absence Make The Heart Grow Fonder".
I seek your views. Thank you.

Sound logical and can float your idea around, but most remove the proxy- PM first. When fake GDP needed to justify his paycheck come GE2016 you may look to change the gahment first.

Those islands are meant for the well-off in the future! Can be another Casino or Sentosa Cove 1...the shrewd govt have already planned far ahead! Rich senior citizens will be surrounded by their children with warmth and love, obviously with clause attached while poor old folks will just wilt n die in the pigeon holes! That's reality here...

PAP say...................

Got no room even 6 ft under as can be seen by the PAP evicting all the tenants from all the cemetries. Even the old Brown cemetry is not excluded. They have tried to exile the unwanted to Batam or JB, this may still be the "FINAL OPTION" for many if they can take their CPF out.

Lau Lee before he up lorry can start a old folks residences at Batam, all run by JTC or HDB. He got the software, being expert on how to die old. Old folks or their children need only to pay with their monthly cpf stipend. Medical from medisave. Indons provides other supporting infrastructure like 20 years lease on graves.

As long as they dont open up pulua ubin to Foreigners/foreign investors i will be very happy. The only people allow there are Native to that Island.

Back then used to enjoy goin fishing and camping with my buddies at Pulau Ubin's Nordin beach before the authorities erected those stupid fences to deter the illegal immigrants..Fresh air and tranquility, with the relax laid back lifestyle practised by the village folks there.. With the fast rapid changing pace of our society, soon having even a simple camping trip at Pulau Ubin will be a thing of the past..:(

When I was young I remember going camping on Tekong . Back then only villagers lived there. Spore was different back then without all the foreigners, multi-million $ MPs, casinos, etc. Even Sentosa was accessible to locals.

Why not an old age home/retreat in Ubin. Children can visit grandparents and parents, and have outdoor live. Sun, sand and sea, good for senior citizen also. Boatman also ear more income. Then can use amphibious vehicle as ambulance to send to changi hospital for treatment if required.:)

Oh Tekong
I do remember those good ol' days
When on this island we use to play
Those many swaying coconut trees
Lining the beach and available free
Oh Tekong
Thou art assessible no more

Oh Pulau Belakang Mati
Why did they change you to Sentosa
Which became expensive to locals
Now there are sprawling casinos
Assessible only to other people
Oh Pulau Belakang Mati
You will remain a memory in my hati.

Our public homes / houses here are getting pricier day by day.

New arrivals in Singapore are making life difficult for the people here, especially the senior citizens.

Medical fees are high and many old folks are left in a lurch.

The high cost of living has made it impossible for many children to take care of their aged parents.

The government has long "washed their hands" by introducing draconian laws requiring children to look after the needs of their aged parents.

Some frustrated parents have taken their children to Court, as the Government juselp them financially.

This has created some form of "bad-blood" between parents and kids.

Recently someone wrote in the ST papers to allow our senior citizens to stay in Retirement Villages on Pulau Ubin...

If that is not possible, then may I suggest that our rich government strike a deal with Jakarta and take over Batam on a 100 years lease ala the British in Hongkong..after the Opium War.

I am sure many "old-timers" would like it on a expansive place like Batam away from the hustle, bustle of expensive Singapore.

Instead of spending billions on Defence, why not spend much less on such schemes.

Mark my words sooner or later if too many Sinke were really to run road and can have the entire CPF taken back for now will face new rules that say even if you intend to run road for good, they'll still retain your CPF like Minimum Sum:-).

Reason?

They'll say "in case you change your mind later and return"

Knowing how well the white scums operating style , I'll say such rules are a possibilty so RUN ROAD WHILE YOU CAN!!

Not a good idea. The old folks will be dumped there for good by singkies.

In early year 2000, the plan was to hit 7.2million eventually, the magic figure. Ubin was planned to be developed to house the excess, but me think is for the rich.:o Old folks in shoebox or pigeon holes.:(
