JAKARTA: Indonesia's president has decided to move the capital of the world's fourth most populous country away from the crowded main island of Java, but has yet to finalise a new location, the planning minister said on Monday (Apr 29).
President Joko Widodo's decision comes less than two weeks after private pollsters said he had won an Apr 17 presidential election, although official results are not due until May 22. His challenger, Prabowo Subianto, has also claimed victory.

"The president chose to relocate the capital city to outside of Java, an important decision," Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.
Brodjonegoro said the administration had yet to pick a new location, but was looking at the eastern side of the sprawling archipelago.
At the opening of his cabinet meeting, Widodo stressed the need for new thinking about the future.

"We want to think in a visionary way for the progress of this country and moving the capital requires thorough and detailed preparation," he said.
The current capital, Jakarta, is home to more than 10 million people, but around three times that many people live in the surrounding towns adding to the area's severe congestion.
Brodjonegoro put the annual economic loss due to traffic congestion in Jakarta at 100 trillion rupiah (US$7.04 billion).
The low-lying capital is also prone to flooding and is sinking due to over-extraction of ground water.
In making his decision, Widodo had also taken into account the fact that nearly 60 per cent of Indonesia's 260 million people live in Java and economic activities were concentrated there, Brodjonegoro said.
During the recent election campaign, Widodo promised to spread economic development more evenly outside Java.
The planning minister did not estimate the cost of moving the capital but said the president had ordered the finance ministry to come up with a financing scheme that allowed participation of private investors.
He said moving the capital could take up to 10 years, citing examples such as Brazil and Kazakhstan.
One of the contenders for the new capital city is Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, state news agency Antara reported this year.
Authorities there had prepared 300,000 hectares of land in case it is chosen as a new government hub, Antara said.

Indonesia approves plan to move capital out of Jakarta

The Indonesian president has signed off on a plan to move the capital outside of the country's most populous island. Officials have cited chronic pollution and congestion as key factors behind the decision.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Monday approved plans to move the country's capital from Jakarta to an unspecified new location.

Ideas to move the capital have long been circulated by previous governments, but Widodo's marks the first formal decision to relocate it off Indonesia's most populous island, Java.

Bold decision

Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said the government decided from three options:

  • Move the capital off Java Island.
  • Relocate the capital near to Jakarta.
  • Leave the capital in Jakarta, but relocate government buildings around the presidential palace.

Indonesia: The sinking capital

'Could take 10 years'

Planning Minister Brodjonegoro said: "This is a big job, impossible to take just one year, it could take 10 years."

President Widodo said: "We want to think in a visionary way for the progress of this country and moving the capital requires thorough and detailed preparation."

Sprawling mega-city

Jakarta, a city of 10 million people, suffers from chronic pollution, congestion and contaminated resources. Some 30 million people live in the surrounding towns and villages, contributing to the city's poor conditions.

While authorities have yet to choose a site for the new capital, Brodjonegoro said it would require up to 40,000 hectares (99,000 acres).

Pse move to Banda Aceh where they will rottan people backside in public. Huat Ah!

Just emulate Brazil: shifted the seat of the government and administrative buildings to Brasília, while the historical and cultural buildings were retained in Rio de Janeiro.

My indo friends told me that it will be Tangerang but the article cited sites far away from Java.

It only happen in these countries. Imagine Geylang was over crowded, government decided to shift some of their premises to Paya Lebar. Problem solved for the government but let Geylang rot. In no time, people from Geylang start to move to Paya Lebar. Then it is back to square one. Move again?

Instead of improving the existing area, they think of the unthinkable solution. What a moron for a government.

Now you know why Indonesia will always be Indonesia … there is a reason for it.

IQ and Race

Tomorrow we kick the Istana out of Orchard Road and dump in Tekkong! & plus that crap Par-Lee-ment & high court.

Irian Jaya would be the top choice.
Irian jaya will be out of the way. You need a capital that is easily reached. Maybe pontianak. Easily reachable from all asian countries. But Sulawesi will be more central.
This idea will spread wealth across the archipelago and make the gshmen less java centric.

But the best place if indonesia wants to benefit economically from the new capital should be just south of dumai port.opposite jb in the straits of malacca.
This site will be a boomtown as it lies long the belt and road plus a major shipping route.

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, with a population of about 10 million, has been overcrowded by the urban population, causing overcrowding in the city and facing serious environmental pollution. China has repeatedly proposed plans to move the capital. Yesterday (29th) Indonesian President Jokowi (Joko) Widodo) finally decided to move the capital away from Java Island to achieve parallel development in the region and solve the problem of overpopulation for the first time. It is estimated that the plan for the move will take 10 years.

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, which is the second largest city in the world, has become more and more serious due to the rapid growth of the urban population. The problem of traffic congestion and air pollution has become more serious. The over-pumping of groundwater has also caused serious subsidence in the urban stratum. In recent years, as long as it encounters heavy rain, flooding It is also getting harder to handle. According to the environmental research report, under the influence of climate change and global warming, Jakarta will sink into the water in 2030.

According to Indonesian media, Indonesian National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said that after the preliminary study and discussion in Qiandu, the three capitals proposed by the president of the state will be: 1. The capital maintains Jakarta However, government agencies have moved to the presidential palace and the Independence Monument to improve office efficiency; 2. to build a new capital 50 to 70 kilometers away from Jakarta; 3. to move the capital away from Java.

Ban Bang said that considering that 57% of Indonesia's more than 200 million people live on Java Island, neither Program 1 nor Option 2 can solve the problem of population expansion on the island, and it is difficult to promote regional balanced development. Therefore, President Jokowi decided to capitalize the capital. Moving away from Java Island, I hope to promote the development of eastern Indonesia.

Indonesia's Antara News pointed out that the new capital may be scheduled to be in the central city of Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan province. It is understood that the city The district is four times larger than Jakarta, and about 300,000 hectares of land can be planned for use.

Regarding the time of capital migration, Banbang’s example of Kazakh and Brazil indicates that it takes at least 10 years for Indonesia to complete. The cost of moving the capital is quite large. Without affecting the government budget, the government will open up financing so that the public can Join the project together.
