A BLAZE in a Stirling Road rental flat on Sunday morning claimed the life of a 49-year-old man who lived alone.

The charred body of Mr Ng Hock Chye was found in the bedroom of the two-room unit on the third floor. Firefighters put out the fire, which was contained in the bedroom, within 10 minutes.

Residents, alerted to the blaze by the thick, dark smoke billowing out of Mr Ng's unit, fled their homes; more than 100 of them watched from below as firefighters fought the flames.

The police have classified the case as unnatural death, and are investigating. It is understood no foul play is suspected.

Even as everyone vacated their homes in a hurry, fishmonger Soh Kok Ping, 46, who lives on the seventh floor, made his way to the third floor when he realised where the smoke was coming from.

When he got to Mr Ng's unit, the door to it was unlocked and a neighbour was already there, shouting for them to bring water. Mr Soh and another resident hurriedly filled buckets to pass to the man, who was trying desperately to douse the flames.

The fire should burn down the entire building and gotten rid of the 200 peasant losers in there!
