Woman seeks $500k in damages
By Selina Lum
A FLIGHT attendant who slipped on a flight of stairs and fell at a restaurant in Turf City more than three years ago is claiming more than $500,000 in damages. Ms Lee Weiling, 25, who alleged that her fall in April 2007 was caused by the negligence of Owen Seafood Restaurant, has filed a suit against its owner, Ah Yat Abalone Forum Restaurant Holdings.
She blamed the restaurant for not taking enough steps to ensure her safety by, among other things, making sure the stairs were free of slippery substances. But the restaurant said she had caused her own fall by not paying attention, as she was walking down the stairs in high-heeled shoes while using her mobile phone.
In her statement of claim filed in April, Ms Lee alleged that the restaurant had failed to check the stairs for 'oil, water and/or other slippery substances' and failed to clean them away to prevent her from slipping. She also said the restaurant had failed to warn her of such substances, allowed her to walk down the slippery stairs, and failed to install fixtures such as handrails or anti-slip mats.
