Lee Hsien Yang sends lawyer's letter to TR Emeritus

Mr Lee Hsien Yang, the chairman of listed conglomerate Fraser and Neave (F&N), has sent a lawyer's letter to sociopolitical website TR Emeritus (TRE), asking it to remove an allegedly defamatory comment on its site about him.

Mr Tan Chuan Thye from Stamford Law, acting on behalf of Mr Lee, sent the letter on Tuesday to Mr Richard Wan, one of TRE's five editors.

In the letter, Mr Tan told TRE that a netizen had left a defamatory remark about Mr Lee in the comments section for one of its articles late last month.

'Mr Lee is determined to protect his reputation and would take all necessary and appropriate steps to do so,' Mr Tan told The Straits Times.

My suggestion to Richard Wan is quit TRE now for his own sake or close the website, TRE is as good as finished if PAP can impose control over it.

Socio-political blog gets fresh legal note

Ever since Mr Richard Wan identified himself as the only Singapore-based editor of socio-political blog Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE), he has been receiving legal letters.

On Tuesday, he received yet another -- from Stamford Law, acting on behalf of Mr Lee Hsien Yang. The letter pointed to defamatory comments published on Jan 30 on the website by a netizen with the moniker “abs”.

Mr Lee’s lawyers said the statement made by the user is “false, defamatory, made without basis, and designed to embarrass, cause distress to and denigrate” their client.

They demanded that TRE remove the offending comments by 5pm on Friday and publish a written apology on the site.

TRE is already carrying a written apology addressed to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for an earlier opinion piece published on Feb 16.

This is to confirm that Mr Lee Hsien Yang has sent a lawyer’s letter to TR Emeritus (TRE), as reported by mainstream media, asking TRE to remove an allegedly defamatory comment posted by one of TRE reader about him.

This case is different from the one initiated by PM Lee Hsien Loong. In PM Lee’s case, TRE has made a serious error by allowing a defamatory article submitted by a contributor to be published on TRE. TRE is truly sorry for the mistake and has unreservedly apologised to PM Lee for the distress and embarrassment caused to him by the false allegation in the article.

In the case of Mr Lee Hsien Yang, a TRE reader had left a defamatory remark about him in the comment section for one of TRE articles late last month. Generally speaking, when a complaint is received by TRE about a comment, TRE will normally comply and delete it. However, Mr Lee Hsien Yang is making more demands than the normal demand of simply removing the offending comment.

TRE Editors felt that acceding to all the demands of Mr Lee Hsien Yang will seriously make running TRE site difficult in future. Hence, we are seeking legal counsel this time.

TRE has appointed Human Rights lawyer M. Ravi to handle this particular case.

Seriously, Richard Wan or Kojak, remove the articles and apologise. You are stuck and resigning from TRE doesn't warrant you to be released. Fighting in court is suicide, more so engaging Ravi.

The Lees or other PAP are not going to keep this up forever as it will look bad if every PAP personality is issuing lawyer letters every day. They also want to be "friendly" too. No political blogger has ever been sued. The reason for doing so is because for the first time, TRE has a face they can contact with and they just want some articles removed.
