STTA boss says issueblown out of proportion

IS THE table tennis manager being pushed out of the association, or being pulled from it?
Whichever way you look at it, Mr Antony Lee’s tenure as the Singapore Table Tennis Association’s (STTA) high-performance manager will be over by the end of this month.
Mr Lee, who was seconded to the STTA from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), is required to report for work at the council.
Revealing this yesterday, STTA president Lee Bee Wah (picture) told Today: “I’m not sacking anybody ... His contract expires on Aug 31, and before the Beijing Olympics, SSC had discussed facilitating his return and I said I had no objection. It has nothing to do with the Gao Ning incident.â€
When contacted by this newspaper, SSC’s high-performance chief, Mr Wayde Clews, confirmed as much, saying: “Antony’s secondment is until Aug 31, and the agreement with STTA was that he would return to SSC after that.â€
On Thursday, Singapore’s 2007 Sportsman of the Year Gao Ning played his third round Olympic tie without a coach in his corner. The paddler, seeded 10th in the men’s singles, crashed out 4-0 to unfancied Croatian Tan Ruiwu, who is ranked No 43 in the world.
And as the player sat on a bench and cried, Ms Lee felt his pain, telling this newspaper that she held the manager and head coach Liu Guodong, who has been with the association since 2006, responsible.
The New Paper on Saturday quotedMs Lee as saying: “I will be reviewing the future of the coaches and the team manager. If their objectives are in line with what we intend to do and they can still contribute, we will welcome them.
“If they’re heading in a different direction, then maybe it’s better for us to look for someone who can head in the same direction.â€
Twenty-four hours later, The Sunday Times reported Ms Lee as saying that the manager’s services were no longer needed by STTA.
She said: “I have a new team, and will have a new CEO and technical director. It is best that the manager is chosen by them. Antony is welcome to apply for the position when we ask for applications.â€
Speaking to Today from Beijing yesterday, Ms Lee denied she planned to dismiss the manager and head coach.
“I didn’t say that Antony and the coach will be sacked,†she said. “I feel that it’s all been blown out of proportion and now the damage is really terrible.
“I don’t want to be entangled in this whole issue. We have to move on to the bigger picture that STTA is working towards.â€
That picture includes grooming the current batch of national players, focusing on the likes of Feng Tianwei, promoting the sport at pre-school level, starting age-group and corporate leagues, as well as plans for a post-career scholarship fund for the national paddlers.
When contacted yesterday, team manager Lee said he had yet to hear from the STTA or the SSC regarding his future.
“I really don’t know and I can’t speculate on the latest development. I have not gotten anything in black and white.
“Everything I know has come from third parties. Whatever happens, I won’t be surprised because I’ve been in sports for 13 years and I know how national sports associations work — once there’s a change in management, more likely than not, there will be a change in staff. The new regime will want to work with people they are familiar with. Whether it is good for the sport, or not, is still debatable.
“Whatever happens, the new management cannot discount the contribution of the former staff. I still feel proud because I can say that I’ve been pat of a team that made history, a team that made the Olympic medal dream happen.â€
