SINGAPORE : A part-time polytechnic lecturer has been arrested for suspected involvement in an unlicensed money-lending business.

He was caught with another man on Thursday. They were believed to be leaders of a syndicate.

Items such as cash, mobile phones, laptops and note books with loan records were seized.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate had a pool of 200 debtors.

The two suspects will be charged in court on Saturday and if found guilty can be fined up to S$300,000, jailed up to four years, and also be liable to caning.

A PART-TIME polytechnic lecturer said to be a syndicate leader was charged with 28 more counts of helping to carry on an unlicensed moneylending business. Lee Kim Hock, 51, charged a week ago, allegedly conspired with Ku Teck Eng and two others to commit the offences between last September and August this year. Ku, 41, who was also charged last week, was accused of 24 more charges on Friday.

It is alleged that illegal loans totalling $28,200 were made out to 16 debtors in various parts of Singapore in Lee's 29 charges. Bail of $50,000 each was offered to Lee and Ku. Lee's case will be mentioned on Oct 8 while Ku's has been fixed for a pre-trial conference on Oct 28. If convicted, they face a fine of between $30,000 and $300,000 and a jail term of up to four years on each charge.
