Lawyers - The Good, Bad and Ugly Ones

If you go by the list, there is a method and the bias is always towards civil litigation as it is a tougher discipline. Its also the reason why the money is in that field and attracts the best minds. They were not also not ready to open it too quickly to cheapen the position. The sad part is that good lawyers for capital crime cases are no longer in numbers as in the past. I just pity someone who did not do it face the courts.
Thanks for the clarification. The scheme was launched in 1997, but Pala made it only in 2001. He should have been in the 1st batch.

That's cheap. Did your sister has any kid or was awarded any maintenance?

They were married about two years and divorced already. No kid. Hadn't bought joint flat too. No maintenance but got one-off settlement compensation of $50k.

sounds like ex-CJ's alleged 'ghost writer' kenneth tan!...
Sant is semi retired and comes down from Perth. But he is worth every penny. Very good with the law and is respected by his peers in this regard. One thing you will notice is that Sant charges high because his cases are less likely to go to trial.

pala loved the law n was good but i dont think he was that good...had great tickets on himself n was v disappointed that for quite some time he was not given the SC title...recall in one yr, an associate r 2 in his firm pulled off a funny but cruel prank on him by coming up wif docs to show that pala was finally due to be made SC...apparently he then went ard calling up his pals to say that he was finally given his due...crushed when it turned out to be bogus n the associates had to leave his firm...fortunately for pala he was finally made SC before he died...

The late Palakhrishnan not too bad either. Fees were ex too. Y

in pala's case i dont think so...generally on balance the first batch to made SC in 97' set a high benchmark...however later on this benchmark appeared to be diluted to a certain extent due to certain apparent agendas...
I suspect our criteria and the people involved in the process differs. Could well be political too.

Bro , i throught he run road already or did not renew paper ?

Lawyer guilty of misconduct to face Court of Three Judges

A LAWYER found guilty of serious professional misconduct by a disciplinary tribunal will have to face a Court of Three Judges.

Mr Leonard Loo, 41, had undergone a probe by the tribunal on four charges, all linked to services he rendered to the management corporation of the Haig Eleven condominium.

One of the charges involved his denying that he had received a cheque for $800 when he knew it had been received, and failing to issue a receipt for it.

The crossed cheque had been made out to his firm for legal advice rendered, but the management of the condominium which hired him in May 2008 was so dissatisfied with his work that it complained about him to the Law Society just four months later.

Mr Loo did not send the receipt for the cheque even when told to do so by the Law Society in August 2009; he acted on it only in April the following year.

Another charge said he failed to produce a relevant bank statement last January when told to do so by an inquiry committee.

Mr Loo, a lawyer of 15 years' standing, withdrew his practising certificate last April.

He claimed in April 2009 that he had no record of ever receiving the $800 sum, but a preliminary investigation at the time found him to be unhelpful and evasive.

Before the tribunal hearings last year, he had denied all four charges, represented himself and cross-examined four witnesses. He also gave evidence, cross-examined by the Law Society's prosecuting lawyer, Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng.

The tribunal, comprising retired judge G.P. Selvam and lawyer Tan Chuan Thye, had harsh words for Mr Loo in its report, saying he had 'persistently prevaricated and procrastinated' in responding to directions to produce the relevant clients' account bank statements.

It found he had received the cheque and banked it, and had personally signed the receipt in May 2008. The tribunal noted that it was important for the management corporation to obtain the receipt from Mr Loo, since the officers who made the payment 'could conceivably come under suspicion of misappropriation' without it.

Had Mr Loo sent the receipt in June 2008, there would have been no need for the tribunal, the report said.

A Court of Three Judges, the highest disciplinary body for lawyers, has the power to suspend, fine or order lawyers to be struck off the rolls.

Why so blur, you say that its an understatement giving the impression that you know about him. Pala was one of the earlier ones to get SC.

hahaha......is it the same pala??? so who is right????
seems like forummers got bull shitted again......

Have anyone got any rating comment for Ramesh Tiwary or Foo Cheow Meng? Are these 2 lawyer as good as Saint Singh?

Many people do not know that if you do not have lawyer the court house has free lawyer waiting to help those who cannot afford to pay. These kind souls provide free legal services and may ask to adjourn the case pending further investigation. Some even provide pro bono case.

Another myth...

Those with lawyers to represent gets reduced sentences compared to those without.
I have seen this to be quite true though must admit many factors come into play. So hiring a lawyer is better than none? I have come across the rare cases of defendant kena screwed by lawyers as well but these are very rare cases.

1 Subhas - Over-rated. Takes up high profile cases to boost his reputation as a fighter in court. Still seeking the SC title but not likely he will be successful. Charges a bomb to defend you.

2 Ravi - If client is not mad, will get mad if in close proximity with him after a short while.

3 Michael Khoo - worth spending the bomb for this SC. Very sharp.

I had a lawyer who borrowed money from me & got reprimanded by Law Society but she gets to keep her PBM
What a joke
Her ex husband owes me $2500,000 but has died - I was introduced to him by the same cheebye lawyer who goes by the name "JN"

In layperson terms, lawyers are grossly overpaid due to a system of ripping-off perpetuated by you know who..
When on earth can we hv sr lawyers making enuf money per month to buy a bungalow? Where is the balance and sense of values???

Subhas like only good for reducing sentences........like never hear him get guilty clients off the hook.......

most of the stories told in court by defendents..........childish and stupid..........

i doubt S'pore has any really good lawyers that can get guilty clients off the hook.......

the late David Marshall did... many times

not the first or second batch...... his got a reputation of a prostitute:: ie anybody can engage him as long as he is paid! He once had my debtor freed from SUb Court order only to didcharge himself when that bloke din pay him. Real basatd, cause me to lose $250,000 debt unpaid becos he fought to make some money for himself.
Datz fucking lawyer for you?

By the way, the Royal Selangor Club got very good curry. Must go and visit again some day. :D
