World's best debater
By Rachael Chang

IT HAS been a good year for 24-year-old Li Shengwu.

Five months ago he graduated as the top economics student in Oxford University. And as the decade turned the corner, he was crowned the best debater at the just-ended World Universities Debating Championships in Turkey - regarded as the world's most prestigious debating tournament.

Mr Li, now a masters student in economics at Oxford, is the third Singaporean to be awarded the honour, cementing Singapore's status as a debate powerhouse.

Since 1981, when the competition began, all Asian winners have been Singaporean. The Best Speaker prize is given to the debater with the highest score from all the rounds of debate, up to and including the finals.

Mr Li who teamed up with Briton Jonathan Leader Maynard to come in second overall in this year's competition, is the son of Fraser & Neave chairman Lee Hsien Yang and corporate lawyer Lee Suet Fern, and the grandson of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

Country-wise, Singapore is ranked fourth in terms of number of winners, behind Australia, Canada and England.

Wah, father and mother both surname Lee

Bad genes + 1 surname Lee = Genius? :confused::confused::confused:

I believe that his mother's maiden name is Lim Suet Fern, daughter of economics professor, Lim Chong Yah, who wrote the 2 economics books used by many Pre-U students in the 1970's.

After the disappointing, almost non-existent oratory skills of LHL, the Lee bloodline has finally recompensated and produced a winner. This Shengwu guy potentially combines the legendary oratory skills of his grandfather and the formidable quantitative skills of his uncle. Throw in a heart for public service and a common touch and we would have a winner, I wouldn't even mind a Lee dynasty in this case. But unfortunately (and strangely) he's not a PSC scholar when he very clearly could have been one if he had applied!

That is a wrong conclusion. Suet Fern is daughter of Lim Chong Yah. Her maiden surname is Lim, She's just retaining the married surname of Lee.

I understand they are divorcednow.

why you sound like a typical PAP por lan par?

Which part of what I said is wrong? Prove it. People like you only see the world in black and white, no room for shades of grey. As long as you see anyone who doesn't foolishly join in the blind bashing of PAP like you waste your life doing then he or she is pro PAP "por lan par", to use your crude excuse for a language.

Big deal! Let him defend the moral right of his auntie to be put in charge of investing the people's money! And a failure to produce positive returns to boot!

Vivian Balakrishnan was a star debater wasn't he? A lot of good he is doing for Singaporeans!

Once you join the PAP, your zest for debate seems to have sizzle....

In a way, yes. When you couldn't even have solid points to backup your debate, no matter how good you are, you will look and sound silly if your opponents are well armed. Good soldiers without good armory will still die in warfare.

HAHAHA. of ALL people who could have said that, you are shameless enough to be the one. Let's put you up there and see how you sweat and tremble without anything coherent coming out of your mouth. You can't even write a bloody blog properly without making grammatical errors and you want to LAUGH AT OTHER PEOPLE'S DEBATING SKILLS? Give me a break. And no wonder nobody reads your joke of a blog. People go there only to laugh at it. You're just a keyboard warrior wasting his life away on forums and blogs thinking that he's a politician. I've seen more political acumen from a block of butter. Let's see you get into Cambridge. Let's see you win Best Speaker at an international debate competition. Heck, let's see you even SPEAK.
