Slipper hurled at BJP leader Advani
16 Apr 2009, 1418 hrs IST, PTI

KATNI (MP): A slipper was on Thursday lobbed at BJP leader LK Advani by a former functionary of the saffron party during a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh, the latest in the series of such episodes involving political leaders.

The slipper was hurled by former Katni district president of BJP Pawas Agarwal, who allegedly was aggrieved at the party leadership for being "removed from his post due to groupism within the party," police said.

He threw the slipper shortly after Advani reached the dais, they said. Soon after the incident, he was taken to the backside of the stage and then whisked away by the police.

The incident comes close on the heels of a journalist throwing a shoe at home minister P Chidambaram during a press conference in New Delhi and a retired school principal lobbing a footwear at Congress candidate in Kurukshetra Navin Jindal during a poll rally.

Protester hurls shoes at Ex-PM

SYDNEY - A MAN protesting the Iraq war hurled his shoes at Australia's former prime minister during a live TV show, mimicking the shoe-throwing protest aimed at former President George W. Bush in Baghdad two years ago.

Peter Gray flung his shoes at John Howard, a key Bush ally on the Iraq war, after demanding the former leader defend his decision to send 2,000 troops to support the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq. 'That's for the Iraqi dead!' Mr Gray shouted as he flung the shoes during the Australian Broadcasting Corp's live Q&A program. The shoes missed their target and Mr Gray was escorted from the studio.

The protest, shown repeatedly on Australian morning TV programs on Tuesday, echoed a similar incident in 2008, when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at then-President Bush during a press conference in Baghdad's Green Zone. Mr Howard had a close relationship with Bush, and Australia was one of the first countries to commit troops to Iraq.

During the ABC broadcast, Mr Howard was forced repeatedly to defend his support of the Iraq war. 'I thought it was justified,' Mr Howard said. 'I think there were errors made after the military operation ended. I think there were too few troops and I think a mistake was made in disbanding the Iraqi army. But I will continue to defend ... the original decision on the basis on which it was taken.' At that point, Mr Gray stood up and threw his shoes at Howard.

Mr Howard laughed the incident off during the program, telling the show's host, 'Forget it, forget it.' 'Is anyone here taking their shoes off? I'm looking around,' Howard said during an interview with Macquarie Radio on Tuesday. 'All in a night's work.'

Peter Gray: "I did it for tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of dead and those that are still living." (ABC TV)

Mr Gray said his actions were justified. 'I did it so there was a chance that thousands of people, tens of thousands of people, in the rest of the world, particularly in the Middle East, could see that not every Australian was behind the decision to invade and rule in the country of Iraq,' Mr Gray told ABC on Tuesday. 'I did it for tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of dead and those that are still living.' -- AP

Throwing shoes at somebody is a great insult and disrespect.

You show respect by taking off shoes - when you enter a mosque, temple or somebody's house - church no need to take off shores

You right! Temple/Mosque need to take of shoe.
Only Church no need ! Never had this in my mind.
Next time I think there will be law/new regulation for anyone to enter conference room/court room to take off the shoe before enter.
Very soon one of the world leader/president/PM will be hit by the shoe. So far all are out of target.
Shoe thrower should do some training at home before they start to throw.

A bronze shoe sculpture honouring Iraqi reporter Muntazer al-Zaidi, who gained global fame by throwing his footwear at former US president George W. Bush in Baghdad on December 14, 2008, stands atop a white pedestal in Tikrit on January 27, 2009. The sculpture was later dismantled.

Better ban shoe throwing in Spore, it can be dangerous:eek:

Just look at our old fat cats MPs, definitely too slow to avoid. If someone even threw a slipper at the old leaf, probably end up killing him

Make sure you throw BATA shoes. They are BuyAndThrowAway anyway. Leave your Bally shoes at home.
