Last 10 in the World: Singapore Fares Poorly On Tackling Inequality

Fake news la. For years the PAP has been distributing wealth to ungrateful sinkies through GST rebates and utility subsidies I’m a very happy receiver. Joining SB75.

I hope to see a photo of your U-Save, Workfare bonus or GST voucher under the sashimi plates of your Chutoro or Otoro in Thailand (cover the serial number, please),

It will the best middle-finger that you can give.

With Singapore ranked among the bottom 10 countries globally on tacking inequality, Oxfam International has urged the city-state’s policymakers to increase social spending, strengthen labour rights and enact anti-discrimination laws, reported the Business Times. Out of the 157 countries studied by Oxfam, Singapore was listed at 149.

Oxfam noted that Singapore fares poorly as its combined spending on health, education and social protection is “well-below” countries like Thailand and South Korea, which spend 50 percent of their budget in the said areas. The city-state is also one of the few remaining countries with no universal minimum wage, it added.

A look at the rate of progressive taxation, Oxfam said the republic “under-taxes” corporations and wealthy individuals. It also has no equal pay or non-discrimination laws for women.

“What’s most striking is how clearly the index shows us that combating inequality isn’t about being the wealthiest country or the one of the biggest economy,” said Matthew Martin, director at Development Finance International.

“It’s about having the political will to pass and put into practice the policies that will narrow the gap between the ultra-rich and the poor.”

There is absolutely nothing wrong with inequality so there is no need whatsoever to "tackle" this issue.

Narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor involves nothing more than the poor getting off their lazy asses and putting some effort into improving their lot.

Absolutely...nothing wrong.

Only thing is which side of the inequality you are on.

I was on the wrong side of inequality so I did what was necessary to get on the right side. It was my own effort. No government involvement was required.

Oxfam is lying! My grassroots adviser is very angry and we are thinking of suing Oxfam for defamation.

We have given out to our local residents so much help in the form of Workfare, U-save rebates, NTUC vouchers, Skillsfuture credits, minimum wages for cleaners and security guards, and cheap groceries through the RC. Why didn't Oxfam mention any of these?

Why don't you shut the fuck up? You can keep all those lanjiao bullshit rebates, vouchers, credit and what not.

Just don't up the prices of utilities, uni fee, town council fee, GST and what not will be more than enough to offset.

Creating so much hardship and yet got the cheek to talk cock. Fuck you!! you understand? CCB John Tan.

Singapore-born citizens are like own family.
Foreigners are just friends.
Unfortunately, our parents feel that friends are more important and bring other women back to sleep and mess up the home.
So don't blame us for walking out of home.

LOL...I like the analogy.
However, instead of walking out, why not chase out the unbecoming parents or housekeepers.
Remember to throw out houseLEEders who don't value their own famiLEE members.

CNA, SINGAPORE: Singapore ranked 149 in an Oxfam index of 157 countries based on efforts to tackle the gap between the rich and poor.

The Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index 2018 was released by the global developmental charity agency on Tuesday (Oct 9).

Singapore ranked ahead of eight countries, including Nigeria (157) and Bhutan (152), but below the likes of Myanmar (138), Timor-Leste (132) and Vietnam (99).

Singapore ranked 86 in the agency’s 2017 CRI Index, with Oxfam partly attributing this year’s sharp drop to the introduction of a new indicator on "harmful tax practices". Singapore “has a number of these”, it said, citing tax incentives such as those for the maritime and financial sectors and a global trader programme.

“It (Singapore) has increased its personal income tax (PIT) by 2 per cent, but the maximum rate remains very low at 22 per cent for the highest earners,” the report added.

Singapore’s low score is also due to a relatively low level of public social spending, Oxfam said, adding that only 39 per cent of the national budget goes to education, health and social protection.

Wages are being suppressed by cheaper foreign labour. So the poor do not have a fair chance to rise up.

Workers wages as percentage of our GDP is way below OECD levels.

It's already captured under social protection, as part of our 39% spending on social needs.

What's happening to the rest of the money? Paying for People's Association inflated budget?

Of course the poor have a chance to rise up. With low paying jobs being done by foreigners poor singaporeans should move up to better jobs. If they are unable to do so it is their own fault. You cannot blame the government for that.

When I first started work I was an engineer. 5 years later there were foreigners who were being hired to do my job at half of what I was earning. However I saw this coming so I had already put plans in place to move up the food chain to a better paying job which did not face foreign competition.

I am glad that they think that they can tame you with $109.

Actually you would be getting $10900 if they only secured 51% of the votes in the last GE.

Honestly I have no idea what these numbers mean whether I’m top or bottom feeder, they give I take lor. Hmmm I wonder what does $109 mean bottom feeder again? :roflmao:
