GEORGE TOWN: A 48-year-old labourer was gunned down in a gangland style execution in Nibong Tebal, Seberang Prai Selatan today.
Loh Hooi Tong was shot at point blank by his assailant at a coffee shop near Taman Sri Mas at about 2.45pm.
State Criminal Investigations Department chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said a bespectacled gunman who rode pillion alighted from a motorcycle in front of the outlet.
"He barged into the coffee shop and fired two shots at Loh who was having lunch with his seven friends.
"One shot hit Loh and our initial investigations showed that the bullet penetrated the rib on the right side of his torso," Mazlan said, adding that the other shot had missed Loh.
He also said the shocking incident sent Loh's friends and other customers scurrying for cover.
"The man stepped out from the outlet and fired several warning shots into the air before speeding off," Mazlan said when contacted.
He said Loh was rushed to the Parit Buntar Hospital but died shortly afterwards in the emergency ward.
A post mortem into Loh's death will be conducted today (Monday).
Mazlan said the police had classified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code and had launched a manhunt for the two men.
