Russian tanker Christophe de Margerie has brought the first batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Yamal to the United Kingdom. London had to urgently turn to Russian gas targeted by US sanctions due to supply outages.

'Perfect Storm' wreaks havoc on Europe’s energy market
A global positioning service puts the tanker in Harwich on Wednesday, although it had previously shown the ship was heading for the Isle of Grain port in Kent, where there is a regasification terminal.

Earlier this month, Novatek, one of the largest Russian gas producers, said that it sold the cargo of 170,000 cubic meters of LNG to Petronas LNG UK Limited (PLUK), the UK branch of Malaysia's Petronas.

Yamal LNG, located in the Russian Arctic, is a joint project of Russia's Novatek, France's Total, China National Petroleum Corporation and the Silk Road Fund. Novatek holds a 50.1 percent share in the project. Its partners own 20 percent, 20 percent, and 9.9 percent respectively.

The UK was forced to turn to Russia due to shortages in gas supplies and a deep freeze that settled over the country at the time. Temperatures in central England fell to minus 13 degrees Celsius, which is nearly 15 degrees colder than the usual average December low.

The UK suffered gas shortages after the shutdown of the North Sea’s most crucial fuel transport route. Ineos, a private company which owns a key refinery near Aberdeen, said it found a crack in a vital 42-year-old oil and gas pipeline. The firm said that it would take two weeks to fix it.

The Yamal project is not directly sanctioned by the EU, but in support of US sanctions Brussels and London have imposed various restrictions on Russia that deprive its energy companies of finance and technology. The measures inevitably affect innovation and the development of new fields and supply mechanisms, which may ultimately compromise Russia’s ability to deliver gas to the rest of Europe.

The ice-breaking tanker is named after the former CEO of Total Christophe de Margerie who died in a plane crash in Russia. The tanker can carry up to 173,000 cubic meters of LNG.

UK is the bastard #2 prime NATO enemy for Putin, Royal Navy ships & RAF jets always tail Russian ships & flights even when they past UK to Syrian Wars. NATO kept threatening Russia by pulling ex-Soviet and ex-Warsaw pack members to NATO and conducts military exercise at Russian borders.

Putin should see British all dead ASAP, frozen or nuked or gas by VX, or starved by famine. See their corpses eaten by their best friend dogs.

If Putin seeks WW3, prime target must be USA, 2nd must be UK. And the best bait now is just next to Syria = Jerusalem. Invade Jerusalem with Arabs, and lure US + UK there to be killed.

Gas prices rise in freezing Europe after explosion and pipeline closure

Europe could be in for a cold, expensive winter.

Energy markets were shocked Tuesday by the closure of a pipeline in the North Sea and a major explosion at a facility in Austria that helps move natural gas from Russia.

The price of both crude oil and natural gas spiked as investors worried that the vital pieces of infrastructure could be out of commission for weeks, choking off supplies.

Italy, which sources 30% of its gas via the pipeline in Austria, declared a state of emergency.

The explosion at the gas facility in Baumgarten, near Austria's border with Slovakia, killed one person and injured 18.

The terminal's operator, Gas Connect Austria, said it had closed the facility and suspended the transit of natural gas through Austria to southern Europe.

Massimo Di-Odoardo, an analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said Europe has enough natural gas in storage to cover its immediate needs.

"But if the flows through don't resume soon and if the cold snap continues, prices will remain high through the rest of the winter," he warned.

Meanwhile, another problem was developing on the other side of the continent.

INEOS, which owns the 235-mile Forties Pipeline System in the North Sea, said that it was shutting down a pipeline because a leak discovered on December 6 had gotten worse.

The network carries almost 40% of the North Sea's oil and gas output.

"This is an oil pipeline, however the closure will result in some platforms producing both oil and gas to shut," said Ben Spry, head of risk management services at npower. He said the outage is likely to last "for weeks rather than days."

The outage is likely to cause a shortfall of natural gas supply in the U.K. of around 10% of average winter demand, according to Wood Mackenzie.

Natural gas futures spiked as much as 17% in London, according to data from ICE Futures.

Europe has seen a cold start to the winter so far, with severe weather hitting the U.K. and much of the mainland over the weekend and early this week. Demand for gas in the U.K. was already up 18% because of the weather.

The International Energy Agency said it was closely monitoring the situation in the North Sea.

Energy security is a key issue for the European Union, which relies on Russia for roughly a third of its natural gas.

The EU has tried to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. It has been improving pipeline connections between individual member states and building up storage, and it has started buying more gas from other countries.

Since 2014, two liquefied natural gas import terminals have opened in Poland and Lithuania, making the region open to imports from elsewhere.

Snow-hit southern Europe could face energy shortages after authorities warned that Austrian pipelines were likely to be out of action for days following an explosion and fire that ripped through a main gas hub near Vienna.

Baumgarten, where the explosion occurred, is a key distribution and reception hub for gas exports and imports, including from Russia, Europe’s biggest gas supplier. In Italy, where rain, snow and extreme cold weather have disrupted traffic in the north-east over the last few days, the country’s industry minister declared a state of emergency due to a lack of gas supplies.

One person was killed and 18 injured in the blast on Tuesday. One of the casualties was airlifted to Vienna’s general hospital with serious injuries but was later confirmed to be in a non-critical condition.

A police spokesman said: “There was an explosion around 8.45am and a fire. A wide area has been sealed off and there are expected to be several injured.”

In Britain, Europe’s biggest gas market, gas for immediate delivery rose 35% to 92p per therm, its highest level for four years.

Austrian police said the explosion in Baumgarten, which is north-east of Vienna, had been caused by a technical problem. Fire services worked until the early afternoon to put out fires started by the blast. The chassis of several cars parked on the site were melted by the heat of the explosion.

Natural gas is transported to Baumgarten through Slovakia and Germany along several pipelines. Gas flows are then delivered throughout Europe via Austria’s transmission network.

The hub’s operator, Gas Connect, said Austria’s gas supply was secured “for the foreseeable future” but conceded that deliveries to the country’s southern and south-eastern borders would be affected until further notice.

The Vienna-based gas company estimated that it would take “days, not hours” to restore supply lines, according to Der Standard newspaper.

Carlo Calenda, the Italian industry minister, said the country must grapple with a serious energy supply problem and underlined the need to develop the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). The project is designed to give Italy a new supply route but has been delayed by protests.

“If we had had the TAP, we would not have to declare a state of emergency,” Calenda told Reuters.

The Italian wholesale day-ahead price surged 97% to a record high of €47 per megawatt hour. Gas prices elsewhere in Europe soared on concerns about supply.

Other countries directly affected include Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The Moscow-based gas supplier Gazprom PJSC said it was “working on redistribution of gas flows and does its best to secure uninterrupted gas supplies to the clients on this transport direction”.

The volume of gas passing westwards through Ukraine, the main transit country for Russian gas, was reduced by a third as a result of the blast.

Slovakia’s main gas transit route to Austria was suspended after the fire, the Slovakian pipeline operator Eustream said.

“As a result of the event in Austria … we adjusted the transit regime in our network to fully secure its safety and suspended transit to Baumgarten,” a spokesman said.

Business plans must be in such that enemies dies as you make profit. The more they die the high your profits. The faster they died the faster you get richer.

Wrong business to save enemies lives for a little profit. Is Putin fucking drunk on X'mas Vodka or what? KNN!
