SEOUL (THE KOREAN HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Shocking images of a South Korean teenage mother who drank for days while her baby daughter was allegedly left to die at home have sparked a firestorm of criticism on the Internet.
The mother and her 21-year-old husband, who was out playing computer games with friends, were arrested on Friday night (June 7) on charges of child abuse resulting in death. The couple are also accused of abandoning the child's body.
Pictures and postings on social media showed the 18-year-old mother out drinking with friends while her seven-month-old daughter was believed to be starving to death.
The mother posted images of herself drinking every day between May 25 and 28, while her baby was allegedly home alone in Incheon.
Her social media posts drew thousands of comments, most of which slammed her for neglecting her duties as a mother and bragging about it online.
The child's father initially confirmed her death at around 4pm on May 31. Both parents are accused of hiding the body in a box until the child's maternal grandfather discovered it two days later.

According to the police, the couple had an argument and left home with the baby on the night of May 23. Police say the mother came back at around 9pm the next day, but left again in the morning.

They say the baby was then left alone until the father, who had been playing computer games with friends the whole time, returned home on May 31.
The mother updated her social media account around 11am on May 31 with a short message implying something bad had happened.
According to preliminary autopsy results, the baby had almost no food in her stomach, suggesting she had not been fed for a long time before she died.
The police are still investigating and the cause of death has not yet been determined.

A young couple has become the target of public fury in South Korea, after local media reported that their seven-month-old baby died after being left alone at home for one week.

According to Korea Herald, the child’s 18-year-old mother had even posted on social media photos of herself drinking with friends every day from May 25 to 28, while the baby was dying alone.

The child’s father, a 21-year-old, was allegedly out playing computer games at internet cafes the whole time that the baby was left alone.

The English-language daily reported that the couple is believed to have left their home after getting into an argument on the night of May 23. The baby was found dead by her father when he returned on May 31, the report said.

While the couple initially claimed that they woke up to find the baby had died on May 31, CCTV footage from outside their home showed that they had not returned home for days, Korea Times reported.

The couple reportedly later told police that they each assumed the other person would return home to look after the baby. Unfortunately, no one did.

In its report, Korea Times said the teen mom’s father reported the death June 2, after he found the baby’s body inside a blanket-covered paper box in the living room. According to the Times, police found scratches on the infant’s hands, legs and head, which could have been caused by the couple’s dogs.

The couple’s social media accounts have since become flooded with angry comments from infuriated South Korean netizens. Some netizens have even dug up older posts by the couple.

In one update posted just two weeks before the baby’s death, the teen accused her husband of cheating on her. “She’s my baby and innocent but I don’t like her anymore because I gave birth to her with you,” Korea Times quoted her as writing.

Citing the National Forensic Service, the report also said that final autopsy results will be available in a month’s time.

The tragic death has also sparked memories of a similar case 10 years ago, where a South Korean baby starved to death after her parents became addicted to an online game which involved raising a virtual baby.

Reports then stated that the 41-year-old man and 25-year-old woman left their baby alone at home while they played online games at internet cafes. According to The Guardian, they only occasionally dropped by to feed the girl powdered milk.

A young South Korean couple recently became the target of much public anger after it was revealed that their child had died in their home due to neglect.
The seven-month-old baby girl was found dead in their apartment after they left her alone for a week.
According to news reports, the 18-year-old mother, surnamed Gyeom, and the 21-year-old father, surnamed Cho, had a huge falling out on the night of May 23. Both of them walked out of the apartment.
Neither of them returned to check on their daughter as they assumed that their partner would go home to take care of her.
During this time, the mother posted photos of herself drinking every day from May 25 to May 31 on her social media accounts.
She also bragged about drinking with friends while eating barbecued pork in one of her posts.

The post on her Facebook read: “Drinking yesterday and drinking today. I’m really going through it~”
Meanwhile, the baby’s father was holed up in an internet cafe playing games with his friend. He only returned home on May 31 and found that his daughter was dead.
At first, the couple tried to hide the body in a cardboard box, but it was later discovered on June 2 by Gyeom’s father who reported the pair to the police. They were subsequently arrested on charges of child abuse causing death.

Their actions infuriated many people, some of whom searched for the couple’s personal social media accounts and vented their anger there.
Most of them were incensed by what the young woman did — bragging that she was out drinking with friends while her baby was dying.
Many slammed her for neglecting her duties as a mother and shamed her for her lack of responsibility.
An autopsy showed that the child had no food in her stomach when she died, pointing out that she had not eaten for a long time before she died.
Investigations are ongoing.

Must be due to Chink cultural influence.

Let's be honest: if you're making babies at such a young age, you probably won't amount to much in life.

At least the father stayed around and prevented another addition to the single mother statistic.

I can't blame the mother. She missed her freedom as a single woman and the baby was a burden and took too much times to care for.

that is possible, as the early history of Korea is Chink driven. But I think that Mongolian edicts in the more recent history of Korea play a larger role in Korean culture from 13XX onwards coinciding with Genghis Khan. Of course, in the last 70 years, Japan has had a huge influence.
