sell-out

STOCKS of Apple's hotly sought-after iPad 2 tablet computers are already running short in Australia, with official and independent retailers both uncertain of their chances of resupply.

The new iPad 2 went on sale to much fanfare last Friday at 5pm. Those who had queued more than 50 hours were greeted with clapping and cheering as they entered Apple Australia's store in George Street, central Sydney.

Four days later, iPad 2 stocks are unpredictable at official Apple stores and non-existent at independent retailers.

Apple's Sydney store told customers yesterday afternoon it had no iPads left in stock.

Customers needed to go online at 9pm to reserve an iPad they could buy the next morning. Some customers were still queuing in the mornings as the stock was released for sale.

At Apple's Brisbane store in Chermside it was a similar story, while in Melbourne the Apple Store at Chadstone said it had completely sold out of iPad 2s and had no idea when more would be available.

The Choice consumer organisation said Apple should clarify the reason for the lack of supply.

"The only explanation for the shortage is either someone is careless in estimating demand or Apple are very cunning in their marketing strategy," said Choice director of campaigns Christopher Zinn. "You don't have to be a genius to know the iPad 2 would take off."

Independent retailers said they were out of stock within hours. Dick Smith Electronics in Sydney, whose store is about 50m from Apple's main store, said it had run out of iPad 2s within 90 minutes of them going on sale.

Next Byte in Sydney was also out of stock.

Independent Apple retailer MyMac in Melbourne was out of supplies by 8.30pm on Friday and did not expect more iPads for a week or two. And MyMac's Sydney store at Bondi said it had no idea when more iPads would be available.

Mr Zinn said Apple had proved very successful at getting people to queue for their devices, and the company should now have a good idea of the demand when it released new ones.

However, an Apple Australia spokeswoman said iPad 2 stocks were still available.

This kiasu sinkie maybe up to something. Seems like there is a 40% mark-up for ipad 2 now.

iPad 2 price gouge: scalpers make a killing

Australians desperate to buy an iPad 2 are spending hundreds of dollars more than the retail price to secure them from scalpers on eBay.

Official Apple stores and third-party retailers quickly sold out of their iPad 2 stock following last Friday's launch, and Apple estimates online orders will take 3-4 weeks to be fulfilled.

The lack of supply internationally is being blamed partly on scalpers, who are re-selling iPad 2s online at significant markups. In Britain there have been reports of fights breaking out outside Apple stores between Apple fans and scalpers.

Globally, Apple is battling to fill iPad 2 demand and reports this week suggest it is looking to Taiwanese manufacturers for parts following component shortages resulting from the natural disaster in Japan. According to DigiTimes, Apple has agreed to pay more for components such as touch screens so it can secure any stock ahead of competitors.

The scarcity has created a strong secondary market for the iPad 2 and the high prices perhaps vindicate the decision by many to line up overnight to secure one.

eBay says it has completed over 12,000 iPad 2 transactions on the US site - eBay.com - since they first went on sale; 110 of those were sold to Australians. On eBay Australia there have been almost 700 completed listings for the iPad 2, most of which have been sold successfully.

The latest figures available from eBay Australia show that 59 64GB WiFi iPad 2 models were sold between March 25, the launch day, and March 27, with the average selling price being $1141. This represents over a 40 per cent markup.

During the same time period, 47 64GB WiFi + 3G models were sold for an average price of $1193, which is a 25 per cent markup on the $949 retail price.

And it's not just the most expensive models that are seeing huge markups - the average sale price for the 16GB WiFi + 3G model is $1020, against a retail price of $729.

eBay Australia said its research tool did not have more recent data beyond March 27, however, scanning through the completed listings search on ebay.com.au reveals sales prices are still just as high as they were in the days following the launch.

With such high demand for iPad 2, it remains to be seen whether competing models will make an impact. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v is due to go on sale this month, while earlier this week Acer launched four new competitor tablets in Australia.

Two of Acer's new tablets run Windows 7, but Microsoft does not appear to be convinced of the long-term prospects for the tablet category. The company's chief strategy officer, Craig Mundie, at a Sydney lunch this week questioned whether tablets would "remain with us".

ipad 2 is good and all, but the biggest problem is that in 1 year time, he has to queue again for ipad 3.

Don't have to wait 1 year, in 6 months ipad 3 coming out. 1 years time ipad 4.

With the iPad 2 only hours away from international launch in much of the world, the anti-iPad crowd has revved up with talk of the iPad 3, but is a 2011 release date really realistic?

If you want to give the Apple iPad 2 a miss tomorrow, or miss out on buying one tomorrow because of the expected launch day/weekend rush and frenzy to get one, some are advising you might be able to pick up an iPad 3 in Septemer.

That rumour comes from John Gruber’s Daring Fireball, and was merely a guess rather than any inside knowledge, yet the quote has taken on a life of its own, with fantastically speculative articles seeming suggesting Apple is going to shaft iPad 2 buyers in 6 months, rather than the usual 12.

Of course, no-one ever complains when a new car model comes out every year, or when all kinds of things are updated on a regular, yearly or so basis, but does anyone truly expect Apple to get an iPad 3 out the door while working so hard to ramp iPad 2 shipments through the roof?

With the stunning lead Apple has in iPad apps, a lead that some expect Android developers to start attacking very quickly, Apple’s ecosystem is set up to reward developers and third-party accessory makers richly if they produce excellent products, while reaping Android riches beyond a trickle of advertising revenue is still a much bigger battle than with iOS.

Apple’s lead in technology is also strong, despite Samsung releasing a new Galaxy Tab 10.1 that is .2mm thinner than the 8.8mm iPad 2, but given that’s the same kind of strategy that saw iPod makers shove voice recorders and FM radios into iPod clones fail to crush the iPod’s lead, one can only wonder if the same will happen in the world of the Android iPad iClones.

Naturally, the usual laundry list of updates for any iPad 3 has been trotted out in an attempt to get you to forego your desires to buy an iPad 2, and subject yourself to agonisingly long waits for an iPad 3 that will also be likely very popular at launch and even harder to get than an iPad 2 will be.

Other features on the laundry list of features Apple will undoubtedly “make a song and dance about” also include a better LCD screen with retina-display style resolution, better graphics, an A6 dual or quad core processor, even more RAM, better quality front and rear cameras, even longer battery life, and a built-in Thunderbolt Port to augment the standard iPod/iPhone/iPad dock port.

What else is expected within the iPad 3, and how realistic is that supposed 2011 date, or is 2012 the real next-gen deal?
