Refrain from leaving large items along the corridors and at the lift lobbies of HDB flats, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

In light of a fire at Block 4 Marsiling Road on Friday, the Sembawang GRC MP posted a comment on Facebook stating that the "town council needs to enforce against such littering", and urged residents to cooperate to "avoid tragedy".

Investigations revealed that the fire started at the 11th floor lift lobby, where a resident, 58-year-old odd-job labourer Samat Kidam, had left large items such as mattresses, chairs and tables.

The blaze had taken place shortly after 10am on Friday, with fire fighters putting out the fire in 10 minutes. They also had to enter 18 units on that level to rescue seven occupants in units affected. A total of 11 people were sent to hospital due to smoke inhalation and breathlessness.

Channel NewsAsia wrote that residents have returned to their homes after the power supply to 20 affected units had been restored on Saturday. Sunlove Marsiling Neighbourhood Link, a non-profit organisation, is helping the affected residents by giving them food, clothing and other supplies.

Investigations are still being carried out and the police have classified the case as mischief by fire.
