I was looking at the picture of young LKY and KGC. Someone asked if LKY was handsome when he was young. I didn't think he was handsome, but he had that 'intelligent look', solid and confident. I immediately realized why young KGC was attracted to young LKY at that time.
Even LKY admitted to himself KGC was academically better than LKY. But KGC was attracted to LKY. LKY was not handsome, and was 2 years younger than KGC. That must have been 'some' hurdle for KGC to fall in love with young LKY. KGC must have seen something in LKY - intelligent and confident. I wonder if Singaporean men appreciate how important those two qualities were in defining a man. Or I should ask, if Singaporean women are aware of the importance of these two qualities in defining a man.
Why do I admire KGC ? She was able to pick the right qualities in a man. She must have really admired LKY's qualities, and as result, supported his ambitions. LKY mentioned in his memoirs that if not for his wife, he would not have been able to pursue a political career. KGC came from a rich family; she was a lawyer and she didn't have to sacrifice her time for someone who was 2 years her junior. She could have 'competed' with LKY and made LKY part of her plan, rather than offering herself as part of LKY's ambition. Very few Singaporean women would dare do that. She wasn't afraid that LKY would outshine her; she was prepared for LKY to outshine her; she supported LKY and his ambitions; she sacrificed her ambition so that LKY could become LKY. She could have married some rich man. But she chose LKY because she appreciated the qualities of a man.
This is not to pass any moral judgment on LKY or KGC. I'm only looking at the marriage relationship. KGC was the ideal wife. If only every Singaporean woman would support her husband like KGC did, Singaporean men would not be whining or looking for foreign brides. KGC was the perfect model.
