Chicken chaos as KFC closes outlets
  • 19 February 2018

Media caption"Angry, sad, disappointed and hungry": We talk to KFC customers
KFC has closed more than half of its 900 UK outlets after delivery problems meant they ran out of chicken.

Last week, the fried chicken chain switched its delivery contract to DHL, which blamed "operational issues" for the supply disruption.

It was unclear when the delivery problems would be rectified, a KFC spokesperson said.

Workers are being encouraged to take holiday but would not be forced to do so, he added.

"Our teams are working flat out all hours to get the rest back up and running as soon as possible - but it's too early to say how long it will take to clear the backlog."

KFC has set up a web page where "fans" can find their nearest outlet that is still open.

It said that in the restaurants owned by the chain, staff on short-term contracts would be paid the average hours worked per day over the past 12 weeks, while those on salaries would be paid as normal.

However, 80% of KFC outlets are run on a franchise basis.

"Franchisees will be seeking their own independent advice, but we're encouraging them to adopt this policy too," said the chain.

Until last Tuesday, KFC's chicken was delivered by South African-owned distribution group Bidvest, which describes itself as "the leading supplier of logistical and supply chain solutions to the UK hospitality and restaurant sector".

But after the change in the contract, many of the food giant's outlets began running out of chicken products.

'Teething problems'
"The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants," KFC said on Twitter.

"We've brought a new delivery partner onboard, but they've had a couple of teething problems - getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex!" it added, apologising to customers for the inconvenience.

"We won't compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, and others are operating a limited menu or shortened hours."

The statement listed KFC restaurants that were still open despite the problems.

The distribution network uses software developed by the firm Quick Service Logistics (QSL).

DHL said: "Due to operational issues, a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed. We are working with our partners, KFC and QSL, to rectify the situation as a priority and apologise for any inconvenience."

The GMB union said it had tried to warn KFC that switching from Bidvest to DHL was a mistake. The change led to 255 job losses and the closure of a Bidvest depot, said Mick Rix, GMB national officer.

He said: "Bidvest are specialists - a food distribution firm with years of experience. DHL are scratching around for any work they can get, and undercut them.

"KFC are left with hundreds of restaurants closed while DHL try and run the whole operation out of one distribution centre. Three weeks ago, KFC knew they had made a terrible mistake, but by then it was too late."

One KFC customer, Claire, told BBC Radio 5 live she was surprised when she went out with her children at the weekend.

"We went on Saturday night to our local KFC in Luton and queued for about 20 minutes in the drive-thru, about 15 cars in the queue, and when we got to the actual counter and asked for our standard family bucket, we were told there was no chicken," she said.

"The kids, who are nine-year-old twins, they wanted chicken and clearly it wasn't available, so we said there's nothing available that we wanted, and we then had the joy of queuing to get back out again."

Other disgruntled KFC customers have been taking to Twitter to express their dismay at the shortages.

Why didn't the chicken cross the road?

In the United Kingdom, the answer is there aren't enough of them to cross — and that's bad news for the 900 KFC restaurants there.

The fast-food chain once known as Kentucky Fried Chicken is engulfed in a crisis in the U.K., where about two-thirds of its restaurants are temporarily closed amid delivery challenges.

The cause? A chicken shortage — coming at a chain whose core product is chicken.

Trying to make light of the situation, KFC referenced the old-fashioned riddle joke in a tweet.

"The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants," KFC's United Kingdom and Ireland outfit said on Twitter. "We've brought a new delivery partner onboard, but they've had a couple of teething problems — getting chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex!"

KFC has a new Colonel Sanders — again. On Thursday, KFC announced that the chain's newest colonel would be played by Ray Liotta, an actor best known for his roles in movies such as 'Goodfellas' and 'Field of Dreams.' USA TODAY

The chain promised not to "compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed and others are operating a limited menu or shortened hours."

Only about 300 were open as of Monday morning.

The situation was not expected to affect the U.S. market. KFC spokesperson Tori Oman said it was an "isolated issue" in the U.K. that the company is working hard to rectify.

"We want to thank our incredible restaurant teams, who are working flat out all hours to get us back up and running again," Oman said in an email.

The exact cause of the delivery problems was not immediately clear, but the U.K.'s Guardian publication reported that KFC blamed the episode on delivery service DHL.

Oman did not address a USA TODAY inquiry on the potential DHL connection.

But DHL acknowledged a problem. "Due to operational issues a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed," the company said in a statement. "We are working with KFC and our partners to rectify the situation as a priority and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Yum Brands-owned KFC had 21,487 restaurants worldwide as of the end of 2017. Sales at U.K. KFC stores rose 5% in 2017.

Chicken destined for KFC is piled high at a DHL distribution depot after the delivery firm's 'new computer system failed' sparking distribution chaos and forced the popular fast food chain to close 562 of its UK branches.

The poultry drought that forced Kentucky Fried Chicken eateries the length and breadth of Britain to close its doors is thought to be costing the fast food chain £1million a day.

Crate upon crate of chicken in plastic wrapping was pictured at a DHL depot in Rugby yesterday, where it was still waiting to be loaded onto lorries.

KFC gave no indication of when operations would be back to normal but urged customers to check its website in order to find the nearest open restaurant. As of today, the chain's website listed 562 UK stores as being open.

The problems relate to the appointment of the German-owned delivery company DHL to take over store deliveries from specialists Bidvest.

A new computer software system developed to manage orders and deliveries failed at the end of last week, triggering delivery chaos.

There was also an accident that shut the M6 on Valentine's Day, the day DHL took over delivery duties, that caused traffic chaos.

HOW HAS THE KFC CHICKEN CRISIS UNFOLDED?
Wednesday February 14 - DHL takes over delivery duties for KFC from Bidvest Logistics to supply food products and packaging to KFC restaurants.

A new computer software system developed to manage orders and deliveries fails, triggering a delivery chaos.

There was also an accident that shut the M6 on Valentine's Day, that caused traffic chaos.

Friday February 16 - Shortage started to bite at KFC outlets.

Saturday/Sunday February 17/18 - Crisis worsens over the weekend.

Monday February 19 - The system collapsed completely. Almost 700 stores are closed.

Tuesday February 20 - 562 KFC stores remain shut.

A KFC spokesperson said: 'Our teams are working flat out all hours to get the rest back up and running as soon as possible - but it's too early to say how long it will take to clear the backlog.'

The firm has set up a 'web page' where 'fans' can find their nearest outlet that is still open.

Many angry diners took to Twitter to complain to the fried chicken company about the chicken shortage.

One Twitter user complained: 'Drove to two separate KFCs to find one had no chicken and one was closed. What even is my luck? Just want some fried chicken.'

Another asked in disbelief: 'As if KFC is closed coz they've run out of chicken?

While another tweeted: 'KFC in both Cheshire Oakes and Chester Greyhound Park are closed because...they're out of chicken.'

Daniel Watts wrote: 'It's crazy to think in 50 years that we will be able to turn round to our grandchildren and say I remember the KFC chicken crisis of 2018', while another added: 'Do you know what I would eat? Chips done in the KFC batter. Kentucky fried chips.'

Another person shared a picture of their feast in a Camden restaurant and wrote: 'I survived the great British @KFC_UKI chicken shortage of 2018 #camden #KFCShortageSurvivor.'

Craig Sanders wrote: 'Chickens are on strike. Store has run out of chicken lol.'

A KFC employee, who asked not to be named, said: 'It's annoying and frustrating for us. It's nuts.

The fast food chain KFC has been forced to temporarily close most of its UK outlets after problems with a new delivery contract led to a chicken shortage.

A total of 562 KFC outlets remained shut following a weekend of disruption that peaked on Sunday night at 646 closures.

KFC published a list of only 338 of its 900 stores that were still open on Monday night. Many were offering a limited menu and restricted opening hours.

The chicken delivery problem is so severe that the company cannot say when operations will be back to normal. But it said it was working “flat out” to resolve the crisis.

Signs on many of the closed stores said: “Sorry, we’re closed. We deliver our chickens fresh into our restaurants, but we’ve had a few hiccups with the delivery today. We wouldn’t want to be open without offering our full menu, but we’ll be back at the fryers as soon as we can.”

KFC tried to make light of the problem, saying “the colonel is working on it” - a reference to the chain’s US founder, Colonel Sanders, whose image adorns the brand.

In a statement it blamed the chicken shortage on a contract with delivery company DHL.

“We’ve brought a new delivery partner on board, but they’ve had a couple of teething problems – getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex,” it said, adding: “We won’t compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours.”

The US-owned company also apologised to customers who found UK stores closed since the end of last week. “We know that this might have inconvenienced some of you over the last few days, and disappointed you when you wanted your fried chicken fix – we’re really sorry about that,” the statement said.

The problems came after KFC switched its deliveries from Bidvest Logistics to DHL in a deal struck last year.

DHL said “operational issues” meant several KFC deliveries over recent days had been incomplete or delayed.

It added: “We are working with KFC and our partners to rectify the situation as a priority and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

DHL announced in November that it had been appointed alongside QSL to manage the supply and distribution of food products and packaging for more than 850 KFC outlets in the UK.

DHL said it would manage the physical warehouse and distribution service. KFC added it had specifically chosen the pair for their reputation of “innovation in logistics” across other industries.

The KFC closures have led to complaints and ridicule from customers.

YouTube user The BigPac recorded a video of his frustration after finding “three or four” KFC closed in the Manchester. He said: “I cannot believe KFC ... we’re going to hit a MacDonald’s up. That is shit mate. We like our chicken.”

He added: “I am proper wounded that no KFC is open. Not one. You need to know about the KFC situation.”

Others mocked KFC and said they had opted for rival fast food outlets.

Courier company DHL has apologised for the KFC chicken shortage, just months after it promised to "rewrite the rule book and set a new benchmark" for delivery.

It comes after the fast food chain was forced to shut shops across the UK because they didn't have enough chicken.

In a statement DHL - who have recently taken over deliveries to the fast food chain - apologised for the inconvenience it has caused.

But embarrassingly for the firm it had promised to "set a new delivery standard" when it announced it had taken over the chicken shop's contract in November last year.

In a press release at the time the company said: "DHL is also committed to setting a new industry benchmark by delivering outstanding service to all KFC’s restaurants and its consumers."

"We intend to re-write the rule book and create a stock management, distribution"

The contract was jointly awarded to DHL and specialist food service delivery company QSL.

Yesterday's shutdown left chicken lovers furious after the blunder saw the fast food giant close a number of its 900 stores when it ran out of chicken and chips.

Branches in Devon, Bristol, Berkshire, Surrey, Suffolk, Newcastle and Cheshire were all affected.

Yesterday the chicken giant blamed "teething problems" with DHL as people dramatically declared it was 'the end of the world.'

In a statement KFC said: "Getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex."

They added: "We won't compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, others are operating a limited menu or shortened hours."

DHL - which took over deliveries for KFC recently - told Mirror Online: “Due to operational issues a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed.

"We are working with our partners to rectify the situation as a priority and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

A KFC employee, who asked not to be named, told GazetteLive : “It’s annoying and frustrating for us. It’s nuts.

“It’s damaging the brand. The amount of people trying the door and walking off is incredible.

“We are getting abuse off people who are surprisingly impatient about chicken.

The worker, who has been employed by the company for more than a decade, spoke candidly about the impact the problems were having on staff and the KFC brand.

He explained KFC changed suppliers on Wednesday this week, and there has been chaos with deliveries nationwide since then.

“KFC changed delivery companies in August.

“A brand new purpose-built warehouse was built and it was all meant to go live on Wednesday.

“There was a crash on the M6 which put deliveries back and they had IT issues.

“Anybody who was due deliveries on Wednesday didn’t get it, so they ran out on Thursday. Then the same happened to others on Thursday.”

Since then, deliveries have been “sporadic” and staff members have to man the stores 24 hours per day in case a delivery turns up.

People up and down the country lost it as the stores closed on Thursday night, with one hungry Bristol man rather dramatically declared it was the ‘end of the world.'

In Manchester people were queuing at a city 'Drive Thru', which had no closure notice on the outside and people say they drove for miles to other stores - only to find they are closed too.

In Plymouth the blunder meant staff had to close up and hungry customers were made to walk away devastated.

At Nottingham’s Milton Street branch staff placed a sign on the door apologising for the store being closed.

Natalie Page tweeted: "KFC would be great if you announced on the sign that all branches were closed to save people from driving to a different.

And @noodle3087 said: "KFC any reason the Bradford greengates store is closed? Just had to drive for another 20 mins to not break a promise to a child. Sign on window just said closed, no reason."

In a previous statement a KFC spokesperson said: “We deliver fresh chicken to our restaurants, but we’re having a few hiccups with our delivery system at the moment.

"We’re really sorry for any inconvenience, and we’re working to have all our restaurants back up and running as soon as we can!”

Mirror Online has contacted KFC for further comment.

DHL stands for 'documents halfway lost'...now that includes ' chicken halfway lost' as well!...

Jollybee also ran into chicken shortage when they went on a new SAP system 4 years ago. The PH media had a good time making fun of them and named the episode "Chickensad" (after the Jollybee set meal Chickenjoy)

They should place order with prc.
They can get human chicken, cloned chicken, fake chicken or paint duck into chicken, no problem.

Think DHL might get sued by KFC, unless if their contract with KFC has liability limit clause. Or else pay like siow delivery of chicken 2 yr also can not earn back this losses.
