KF Seetoh on the CNA episode on School Bentos: " Do those controlling overlords in the govt agencies rule by example? "
*It was right as rain of show host Diana Ser and her CNA production team to follow up on the school bento meals after the initial saga about food quality and range. But the brilliant touch was when she checked out how much leftovers was discarded by the students, by the trash bin.
Being a 'good boy' media organistion, I think it showed a tame representation of reality. Some threw just the vegetables, some half the meal yet some just the brown rice.
The words "bland" and "tasteless" was mention at least ten times through the show. And I learned something new.. that in the name of "health and nutrition" MOH controls what ingredients are to be used and how it's to be cooked. Among many, no coconut milk and nasi lemak is flavored by "pandan leaves" said the caterer.
Of course the TV presented meal for her was swee swee, but when she sat down with the kids for a less than PR bento... I saw her expressions.. trying hard to suppress the harsh reality. They looked like something worse or no better than Changi Hilton bento meals. I saw that show too.
BUT, the kicker was when she asked the person at MOH if she ate those bento meals herself, "No" came the answer as she relied on her team, that reported it was healthy and nutritious. Skipped the part about flavour..Me siam.
Walaueh. I ask, do these controlling overlords in the govt agencies rule by example? Eat what they preach, or issit a "do as u say, not as I do" kinda philosophy.
Poor kids..they will grow up confused about the food schools groom them to eat VS the food their granny loved them with. I am sure even LKY and his beautiful wife took his kids n grandkids to devour outstanding Nonya chow.. Salt, coconut milk and all. Lets these kids have a proper childhood relationship with food culture la.
It's about moderation not dictation.*
