Methinks the present can be found in the roots of the cause. First the Americans won the cold war, then the war of those who have and those who have not fueled terrorism. In the 1990s the richer the Western Nations became the further behind the Middle East was left. Clinton's cruise missiles did nothing to deter terrorism in the Middle East. Then we had 9/11.

The purpose of President George W Bush's Iraqi invasion was to replace Saddam's regime with a modern style of democracy. The plan was to convert the entire region to the expected stability and benefits a modern consumption led democracy would otherwise provide. This in turn would provide the necessary growth and a template to the rest of the Islamic world the development they sought.

The question is Can modern democracy be integrated with the current Islamic way of life in the Middle East? Is it working?

I do not have the knowledge to talk about something so complicating. :o All I know is that there are few sects (sunnis and shiites??) within Iraq that are ready anytime to cut each others' throats. Maybe they thought that the US's style of freedom includes the freedom to kill one another.

Are you confusing the Obama administration with the Bush administration? The nonexistant WMDs were a major embarrassment to Bush but the tide has turned at the end of his term in 2008 and the Obama Administration's election promise was to complete the job and get out of Iraq.

I'd say, it's the same shit, just different color and both still smell like shit. And the families of dead gis will tell you the same. obama's still continuing many of bushite's policies though with less fanfare.

Any changes in the current engagement in iraqi is only because the us wound down their military activities from futility, not because of a decisive victory for the "hearts" and "minds" of the iraqis.
