They were not suppose to look like east asians.
One islamic khwarazm unfortunately butchered genghis Khan's trade delegation beheading all except one which escaped. That got genghis to stop his pillage of China and go west after the Khwarazm, buthering everything in its path, men women and children. Nothing survived in that city. Molten lead was poured into the ears of the khwarezm alive for him to die a painful death or so it was said.
For the other cities, men were butchered and women and children were allowed to live if they surrender without a fight. hence the east asian looks.

Not all Genghis khan army were monggols during invasion of khwarazm empire. Many were chinese from previous invasion.
