The Russian-made INS-Chakra is the Indian Navy’s only operational nuclear attack submarine. The INS-Arihant, poised to be India’s second nuclear submarine, has cleared trials but is awaiting final clearance from the Indian Navy.

New Delhi (Sputnik) – A Russian nuclear submarine leased by the Indian Navyhas been severely damaged in an accident and has not sailed for a month. According to ‘The Print’, the attack submarine is currently berthed at its home port of Visakhapatnam for repairs.

The sonar dome of INS Chakram, which has a submerged displacement of 12,770 metric tons suffered severe damage in an accident that occurred sometime in August this year, according to reports.

Sputnik tried to confirm the extent of damage to the submarine, but naval officials at Vizag did not divulge any substantial information despite repeated calls.


“Concerned officials have been engaged in the meeting since morning. We are not able to say more than this,” a naval officer who did not wish to be named told Sputnik.
Nevertheless, sources said that the sonar dome was damaged either while the ship was sailing off the coast of Visakhapatnam or while it was negotiating the narrow channel while entering the harbor.

“The sonar dome is the protective cover of the sonar-eyes and ears of the ship, which is located in the bow of the submarine just below the torpedo tubes. The time taken to repair it will depend on the extent of the damage. We should wait for an official statement on this issue. But, yes, if the submarine receives any damage, it is a very sensitive issue,” Commander Abhay K Singh (Ret.), a research fellow at the Military Affairs Centre in the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi told Sputnik.

The Indian Navy had formally inducted the nuclear-powered submarine into its fleet in April 2012 on a 10-year lease from Russia at a cost of approximately $900 million.

India’s first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) appears to have suffered from an accident that has knocked the boat out of commission for the past 10 months.

The vessel propulsion compartments were flooded with seawater due to what appears to have been human error. According to the Indian newspaper The Hindu, a hatch on the port side of the vessel was left open by accident while Arihant was still in port. Water apparently entered the vessel when it set sail.

As the lead boat of a new class of submarines and as New Delhi’s first attempt at building an SSBN, Arihanthas had its share of problems. Senior Indian Navy sources told The Hindu that Arihant has faced problems from the beginning partly because of “major differences between the Russian-supplied design and indigenous fabrication are said to have left many issues unaddressed satisfactorily.”

However, this latest accident does not have anything to do with design flaws or manufacturing defects. The problem in this case is simple negligence—a hatch being left open.

The Indian submarine fleet has a long history of serious accidents. Indeed, in recent months, INS Chakra, Project 971 Akula-class nuclear attack submarine leased from the Russian Federation, suffered damage to its sonar dome in October. Since 2008, the Indian Navy’s submarine force has suffered at least three serious accidents, two of which resulted in serious loss of life.

It is not yet clear if the accident onboard Arihant will seriously impact the developmental progress of India’s submarine-based nuclear deterrent. A second SSBN called Arighat was launched on November 19 earlier this year. That vessel is apparently conducting sea trials according to The Hindu.

The Indians plan to build three additional Arihant-class vessels for India’s retaliatory second-strike capability. However, Arihant has apparently proven to be far more expensive than anticipated—and technologically far more troublesome than expected. Indeed, the vessel has been in development for more than 30 years.

“It was initially estimated to cost about ₹3000 crore [crore=10 million] for three boats — now the cost of Arihant itself seems to have gone over ₹14,000 crore,” a former high-ranking naval officer told The Hindu.

The vessels are expensive, but it seems likely that New Delhi will continue on its path to develop a survivable submarine-based deterrent. With hostile nuclear-armed China and Pakistan next door, India has little choice but to persist with the development program despite its exorbitant cost.

One of the crown jewels of the Indian Navy, a $2.9 billion ballistic-missile submarine, was sidelined for over 10 months because someone left a hatch open.

The INS Arihant suffered “major damage” shortly after it was commissioned in 2016 due to something out of a submariner’s worst nightmares: Someone forgot to close a hatch. The incident happened in Visakhapatnam harbor shortly after the vessel was commissioned.

“Arihant’s propulsion compartment was damaged after water entered it,” The Hindu reported Monday. “A naval source said water rushed in as a hatch on the rear side was left open by mistake while it was at harbor.”

Western media outlets were stunned at the “human error” attributed to the ordeal.

“As the star of the Indian Navy, Arihant should have attracted the best submariners India had to offer, which makes this accident all the more baffling,” Popular Mechanics reported Monday.

Yea, this sort of mentality afflicts the Pakistanis as well. And it's not just Indian Navy, airforce is sama sama. Intolerably high incidences of plane crashes, delayed and outdated domestic LCA fighter puffed up to a 4.5G+ fighter comparable to Eurofighter Typhoon, constantly fantasizing about how the future MCA is going to thrash up the F-22 and J-20 when there's not even 1 single functioning prototype to date...

The only up to par modern suite of fighters in the IAF are the 200+ SU-30MKI purchased from Russia, the way you hear them talk it's like they are just a step behind USAF.

India’s first ballistic missile submarine was out of commission for ten months after someone neglected to properly close a hatch. The nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant was flooded with saltwater, necessitating nearly a year’s worth of repairs. The submarine is designed to function as a floating arsenal of nuclear weapons, guaranteeing a retaliatory strike in case of surprise attack.

The incident was first reported by The Hindu. According to an Indian Navy source, a hatch was left open on the rear left side of the ship, allowing seawater to rush into the propulsion area while the Arihant was in harbor. Arihant was out of action for ten months as water was pumped out and pipes were cut out and replaced. Indian authorities likely felt that pipes exposed to corrosive seawater couldn't be trusted again, particularly pipes that carry pressurized water coolant to and from the ship’s 83 megawatt nuclear reactor. Failing pipes could not only endanger the ship’s crew but the entire submarine... and her nuclear weapons.

India’s first ballistic missile submarine is the result of a $2.9 billion submarine technology program. Construction on Arihant began in 2009, and the ship was commissioned into the Indian Navy seven years later in October 2016. The modified Russian Akula-1 class nuclear attack submarine was lengthened to accommodate twelve K-15 short-range nuclear missiles or four K-4 intermediate range nuclear missiles. K-15 missiles, with their 434-mile range, primarily target Pakistan, while K-4 missiles, with their 2,174-mile range can reach all of Pakistan and as far as the capital of India’s other neighborhood rival, Beijing. A second missile submarine, INS Arighant, was launched in December, and at least three submarines are planned.

India has a “No First Use” policy with regard to nuclear weapons, promising that it would only use nuclear weapons in response to a nuclear attack. The nation is only the sixth country in the world to put ballistic nuclear weapons at sea, a strategy designed to render at least part of the country’s nuclear arsenal invulnerable to surprise attack. The strategy, known as Continuous At Sea Deterrence, is employed by several countries including the United States and requires at least one nuclear-missile armed submarine at sea at all times.

How in the world could a $2.9 billion submarine be sidelined by a simple mistake? Not leaving hatches open that could potentially sink a ship, particularly a submarine, is basic common sense. Why were the propulsion section and nuclear reactor on the 364-foot long submarine unattended so the flooding went unnoticed as long as it did? As the star of the Indian Navy, Arihant should have attracted the best submariners India had to offer, which makes this accident all the more baffling.
