Illegal modifications by vehicle owners have increased almost tenfold since 2008.

Land Transport Authority figures show that 146 vehicle owners were caught monthly for illegal modification in 2008, compared to an average of 1,360 in the first three months this year.

At this rate, more than 13,000 vehicle owners would be caught by the end of this year.

Offenders can be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for a maximum of three months and their illegal modifications could void their warranties and affect insurance claims.

Read the full report in The New Paper on Tuesday (June 4).
