Car thief killed in head-on collision after robbery, five others hurt

JOHOR BARU: An 18-year-old man died after the vehicle he stole some 30 minutes earlier near a mall in Ulu Tiram here was involved in a head-on collision with two vehicles.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Ismail Dollah said the victim and his accomplice were involved in a robbery and had stolen a Proton Exora in Taman Puteri Wangsa here at around 7am on Sunday (Aug 16) before making a run for it in the Kota Tinggi direction.
“Along the way, the suspect lost control of the vehicle near KM20.5 of Jalan Johor Baru-Kota Tinggi, swerving into the opposite lane and colliding into two oncoming vehicles.
“The suspect died on the spot due to severe head injuries, while his 22-year-old accomplice suffered from internal bleeding and is receiving medical attention at Hospital Sultan Ismail’s red zone, ” he said.
Supt Ismail added that four other victims, aged between five and 40, in the other two vehicles involved in the crash suffered from various injuries and were also sent to the same hospital.
“Investigations showed that the deceased possessed three counts on his criminal record and his accomplice had seven, ” he added.
The case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving resulting in death, while the robbery case was under the investigation of the Johor Baru South police department, said Supt Ismail.
