The London townhouse where Jimi Hendrix lived in the late 1960s is to become a dedicated museum. AP

The Georgian townhouse Jimi Hendrix once called home is to be turned into a museum highlighting the guitar great's life and career.

Officials and fans have won a STG1.2 million ($A2.24 million) grant to revamp the Brook Street attic in London, where Hendrix lived with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham from 1968.

The new museum will feature artefacts from Hendrix's life and memorabilia from his career.

The place will also be refurbished to look just as it did when Hendrix lived there.

A blue plaque commemorating Hendrix's former London home was put up in 1997.
