It was billed as a mega emporium with markets and restaurants, a gourmet paradise catering to Singaporeans' love of all things Japanese, but the fate of Emporium Shokuhin at the Marina Square Shopping Mall now hangs in the balance.

Epicurean Concepts Marina Square, the company at the core of the emporium, filed for judicial management last week, saying it was unable to pay its debts of more than $1 million. It indicated it had a potential investor for the business, and its application for judicial management would protect it from its creditors in the meantime.

Reported in ST of Nov 27, 2016 that Lim Li-Wei , an engineer by training and a former SAF scholar was the CEO.
Not sure( as I have no inside info) if this is another example of scholar engineer who cannot do business (like one Desmond or Ms Ho) or the continuing saga of too many shopping malls (with the same boring shops) AND high rentals ( relative to other countries) that kill so many business already.
Unfortunately private sector cannot say its long term investments and ask for 10 to 20 years before a judgement is made, unlike GIC/Temasek that also have the luxury of using other people (meaning our tax) monies and still rake in super high remuneration.

It's located at a weird basement part of Marina Square. Trust me, u wouldn't know this is part of Marina Square. You will only see it if u drive and let someone drop off at the nearby dropoff point.
location is very important in this kind of business. twg has a high-priced eatery section for tea snobs yet it can attract hungry and thirsty ghosts to pay $69 per person for tea, scones and sandwiches from 2pm to 5pm (after lunch and before dinner) due to its very visible location in the middle of a busy high end shopping area. they target high ses locals and well heeled tourists shopping and staying at marina bay sands. even though there are some empty tables they are in no rush and make you wait in line. these customers want to be seen by others as they bite into macarons and sip 1837 white tea. many gook, jap and tiong milfs with rich hubbies.

marina square is so yesterday. must relocate to inside the waterfall at changi jewel to remain relevant. that bread street kitchen by gordon ramsay at mbs is now totally blocked from the bay view by construction. apparently a taller structure is cumming up right in front of the light show at the water’s edge. every biz is trying to grab the best location and prevent others from having visibility. very tough biz.

I just heard from a Collick that Don Don Don will open their next outlet at City Square Mall, next to Mustafa. They will take over the bankrupted Toy R Us huge space in the mall.

Mustafa is almost or if not, has already become a tourist attraction. Singapore has become such an expensive city for visitors from neighbouring countries. I guess Don Don Donki is taking advantage of the next to Mustafa location at City Square Mall and making a bet with tourist volumes there. :biggrin:
