The chef at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem reportedly stepped out of line last week when he served dessert in a shoe to visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie, taking dinner etiquette to a new low for the guests whose home culture keeps footwear not just off the table but outside the front door.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Sara hosted the Abes for dinner at their residence in Jerusalem during an official visit to Israel by the Japanese leader.

Celebrity chef Segev Moshe, who occasionally cooks for the Netanyahus when they are entertaining visiting dignitaries, dished up a gourmet spread which was rounded off with chocolate pralines served in two pairs of men’s black brogues, size unknown.

A Japanese diplomat told the Hebrew-language Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper that whatever it was that Moshe was aiming at was lost on them.

“There is no culture in the world where you put shoes on a table,” the unidentified diplomat said. “What exactly did the illustrious chef Segev think to himself. We can’t understand what he was trying to say here. If it is humor then we don’t think it is funny. I can tell you we were offended on behalf of our prime minister.”

A senior Israel diplomat who had served in Japan told Yedioth that the unusual choice of tableware was “a dumb and insensitive decision.”

“There is nothing more despicable in Japanese culture than a shoe,” the diplomat continued. “Not only do they not enter their homes in shoes, you won’t find any shoes in their bureaus. Even the prime minister, ministers, and members of parliament, host in their bureaus without shoes. This is a failure and a diplomatic mockery. A disrespect of the highest order. It is like giving a Jewish guest chocolate inside a vessel in the shape of a pig.”

A source close to Segev explained to the paper that the dessert was not served in a real shoe but in a metal sculptures by industrial designer Tom Dixon. The artist’s website describes the pieces as doorstops.

The source noted that both prime ministers and their wives enjoyed the meal and that Prime Minister Abe even invited Segev to go and cook in Japan.

It becomes immortalised in the news.

And even more so if it was done in front of another head of state and have the entire world know about it later on through international media coverage.

Shoe on the dinner table
This happened when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, was served dessert in a shoe at dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on May 2.

The meal, in Israel, was served by celebrity Israeli chef Segev Moshe.

It is unknown if Abe was offended by the unusual presentation, but he did invite Segev to go cook in Japan.

Even so, Japanese and Israeli diplomats were offended on his behalf.

A senior Israeli diplomat who served in Japan said that the choice of presentation has an extremely offensive connotation in Japan.

According to Yediot Aharonot, (translation via The Washington Post), the senior diplomat said:

“There is nothing more despised in Japanese culture than shoes.

Not only do they not enter their houses while wearing shoes, you will not find shoes in their offices either.”

Even the prime minister, ministers and members of parliament do not wear shoes to work…

It is equivalent to serving a Jewish guest chocolates in a dish shaped like a pig.”

A Japanese diplomat also told Yediot Aharonot:

“No culture puts shoes on the table. What precisely was this illustrious chef Segel thinking?

If this is meant to be humour, we do not find it funny. I can tell you that we are offended for our prime minister.”

Angry comments on celebrity chef’s Instagram
According to the chef’s Instagram post on his creation, the shoe is not an actual shoe, but a sculpture made out of cast metal.

Nevertheless, some were offended enough to flood the chef’s Instagram page with criticisms.

But amidst the angry comments offended on Abe’s behalf, there lies a comment by a Japanese person who wasn’t offended at all.

Abe’s last visit to Israel was in 2015 — the first visit by a Japanese prime minister since 2006.

When Japanese leader Shinzo Abe and his wife dined with Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu at the Prime Minister’s Residence on May 2 during Abe’s second official visit to Israel, they finished their gourmet meal with a kicker of a dessert.

Israeli celebrity chef Moshe Segev, better known as Segev Moshe, the prime minister’s private chef, capped the elaborate dinner with a selection of chocolates served in a metal shoe, which is considered highly offensive in Japanese culture.

While Abe took the unusual presentation in stride, Japanese and Israeli diplomats and Japan watchers were shocked that the Japanese prime minister would be served from a shoe.

“This was a stupid and insensitive decision,” a senior Israeli diplomat, who had previously served in Japan, told Yediot Aharonot. “There is nothing more despised in Japanese culture than shoes. Not only do they not enter their houses while wearing shoes, you will not find shoes in their offices either. Even the prime minister, ministers and members of parliament do not wear shoes to work... It is equivalent to serving a Jewish guest chocolates in a dish shaped like a pig.”

“No culture puts shoes on the table,” a Japanese diplomat told Yediot. “What precisely was this illustrious chef Segev thinking?
“If this is meant to be humor, we do not find it funny. I can tell you that we are offended for our prime minister,” the diplomat said.

Segev posted photos of the dinner, including a closeup of the infamous dessert, on his Instagram account.

“You’ve made your greatest fiasco ever,” commented one Instagram user. “The nation will never forget this, Segev. I truly loved you. You should be ashamed.”

The award-winning chef is a prominent restaurateur, author and television personality. He is also the head chef for El Al Airlines.

Abe first visited Israel in 2015, the first Japanese prime minister to have done so. Abe and Netanyahu discussed North Korea, the Iran nuclear deal and Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Netanyahu Offends Japanese Prime Minister By Serving Him Dessert In A Shoe
May 7, 2018 By Gabe Friedman

(JTA) — After a day of high-level meetings in Israel on May 2 — some of which involved the stressful topic of Middle East peace negotiations — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sat down to dinner in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence.

According to multiple reports, things went smoothly until dessert — chocolates served in a shoe.

That presentation choice would seem bizarre to an eater from just about any culture, but it was especially out of place in front of Netanyahu’s Japanese guests, Abe and his wife, Akie. Japanese etiquette stipulates that shoes should be kept outside of one’s home and office, among other taboos.

Israeli celebrity chef Moshe Segev, who was in charge of the meal, didn’t see anything wrong with the idea, posting about the night on Instagram. His publicist said the shoes were “sculptures” crafted by artist Tom Dixon.

But the faux pas was not lost on Japanese officials.

“What exactly did the illustrious chef Segev think to himself. We can’t understand what he was trying to say here,” one unidentified Japanese diplomat told the Hebrew-language paper Yediot Acharanot. “If it is humor, then we don’t think it is funny. I can tell you we were offended on behalf of our prime minister.”

A senior Israeli official told the paper the decision was “stupid and insensitive.”

In addition to potential future Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, Abe and Netanyahu also discussed cybersecurity cooperation between Israel and Japan. But the shoe story by far has been the most talked about story from Abe’s visit.

At least the main course wasn’t sole.

It was a dessert fit for Dr. Scholl’s — not the prime minister of Japan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t exactly put his best foot forward when he served his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, chocolates in a metal shoe.

The repast kicker proved to be a cultural faux pas given the Japanese etiquette that calls for footwear to be kept outside the front door.

Bibi and his wife, Sara, hosted Abe and his wife, Akie, for dinner May 2 at their Jerusalem home, where celebrity chef Segev Moshe cooked up a gourmet spread capped with the offending dessert.
The pralines made of gold and white chocolate served inside two pairs of men’s black brogues apparently didn’t blow the socks off the Abes, who managed to take the gaffe in stride.

A Japanese diplomat expressed his dismay to Israeli news outlet Yedioth Ahronoth.

“There is no culture in the world where you put shoes on a table,” the unidentified diplomat told the Hebrew-language paper, according to the Times of Israel.

“What exactly did the illustrious chef Segev think to himself? We can’t understand what he was trying to say here. If it is humor, then we don’t think it is funny. I can tell you we were offended on behalf of our prime minister.”

A senior Israeli diplomat who had served in Japan decried the “dumb and insensitive decision.”

“There is nothing more despicable in Japanese culture than a shoe,” the diplomat said. “Not only do they not enter their homes in shoes, you won’t find any shoes in their bureaus.

“Even the prime minister, ministers and members of parliament host in their bureaus without shoes,” he continued. “This is a failure and a diplomatic mockery. A disrespect of the highest order. It is like giving a Jewish guest chocolate inside a vessel in the shape of a pig.”

A source close to the chef stressed that the dessert was not served in a real shoe but rather in leather-looking metal sculptures forged by industrial designer Tom Dixon.

And yet the artist’s website described the pieces as doorstops, according to the Times of Israel.

Meanwhile, the Japanese embassy in Israel has denied that the Abes were offended.

On the other hand, Japan was reportedly enraged last month about South Korea’s plans to serve a mango mousse dubbed “Spring of the People” at a North-South summit.

The item depicted the small islands known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in Korea — islets whose sovereignty is disputed by Tokyo.

Mr Abe appeared to enjoy the rest of his trip, seen here laughing heartily during a joint meeting of Israeli and Japanese business leaders at Mr Netanyahu's office

It appeared every course was served with one as Mr Netanyahu shared a picture of the party being served appetisers held in metal hands.

The publicist claimed Mr Abe was not offended and was so impressed with the food he even invited Mr Moshe to cook in Japan.

The creative chef often cooks for Mr Netanyahu during state visits, last year serving dessert on a plate cut to resemble silhouettes of him and visiting U.S. President Donald Trump.

‘Disrespect of the first order’: Netanyahu puts his foot in it by serving Japan’s Abe dessert in a shoe

JERUSALEM — There aren’t that many cultures where putting a shoe on the dining room table is acceptable behaviour, but for the Japanese there is clear etiquette against allowing outdoor shoes inside.

That might explain the furor following a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, to Israel last week.

After a day of high-level meetings on May 2, the Japanese leader was treated to a festive meal at the official residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu. It was their second time in Israel, and the visiting couple were served a top-notch meal by celebrity Israeli chef Segev Moshe.

But then came dessert. A selection of delectable chocolate pralines — artistically arranged inside a shiny leather shoe.

Israel’s popular daily newspaper Yediot Aharonot wrote Monday that “Japanese diplomats, Israeli Foreign Ministry officials and high-ranking Israeli diplomats who previously served in Japan were shocked by the idea.”

“This was an insensitive decision,” the article quoted one unidentified senior Israeli official as saying. “There is nothing lowlier than a shoe in Japanese culture. Not only do they not wear shoes at home, you also won’t find shoes in their offices. This is disrespect of the first order.”

A Japanese diplomat, also not named by the paper, said: “There’s no culture in the world in which you put shoes on the table. What was the distinguished chef thinking? If it was humour, we don’t think it is funny; we were offended on behalf of our prime minister.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was not involved in approving the dishes for the meal.

“We respect and appreciate the chef. He is very creative,” the ministry said.

Segev’s creative side was displayed last May when President Trump visited Israel. Then, the celebrity chef served up a dessert in the shape of a double-headed Trump and Netanyahu.

On Sunday, Segev proudly posted a close-up photo of the offending shoe-filled dessert on his Instagram account, writing: “Chocolate selection from the world by #SegevArt – – – A metal shoe by @tomdixonstudio”

“The dessert was served inside a sculpture by international artist Tom Dixon, whose works are displayed in major museums around the world and for the first time was displayed in Israel at a meal. This is a high-quality piece of art made of cast metal in the shape of a shoe; it is not a real shoe,” Segev’s publicist said in a statement, according to Yediot Aharonot.

On Instagram, however, some of his 72,000 followers offered a different opinion:

“When you cook at a diplomatic meal, the minimum you can do is inquire about the guest. In Japan, shoes are considered contemptible, they always take off their shoes at the entrance to every home, both for themselves and for others,” wrote one person.

Another person wrote: “you don’t need to know any culture to know that serving shoes at a dinner is WRONG!”

Serving dessert in a shoe was not the only controversy caused by the visit. On Friday, Netanyahu uploaded a short video clip to his Facebook account complaining about a lack of media coverage of the visit.

“I want to tell you something, Japan’s prime minister visited here. He leads the world’s third-largest economy. He brought with him an enormous delegation of businessmen, the heads of the largest corporations. You know the names: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and many others. Did you hear anything about this in the media? Nothing! So open my Facebook and learn about this,” said Netanyahu in Hebrew.

Israeli journalists responded by pointing out that the Hebrew media ran more than 50 items about various aspects of the trip, the Times of Israel news website reported. They also highlighted that the two leaders did not hold a news conference.

“Prime minister perhaps it’s time to stop with the fake news!!! Not only did you not allow the journalists into your meetings with the Japanese prime minister, except for pool photographers, the media did actually report on this visit. So maybe you should delete this embarrassing post?” wrote Itamar Eichner, Yediot Aharonot’s longtime diplomatic correspondent.

Moshe Segev

DJ Topgear

Alternative Facts

Patrick Workman
