Iran plans to build a canal to caspian sea but that looks too difficult due to terrain. However if it is built, Russia will have a new southern port to bypass western blockade.
So iran is important to both China, which buys 1.3 mil bbls of oil a day , about two or three super tanker loads, and russia. Both cannot allow iran be turned into anarchy like in libya, Syria and iraq, which is what US and israel wants.
