JB to KL ETS train

They spent billions and only two trips per day? Or maybe they only got enough for two sets of trains?
If badawi had not cancelled it way back in 2003, this service would be running all the way to Tg pagar for 15 years already. Hope PAP allow ktm to extend service to kranji now that jockey club has been acquired.
The ticket price of RM84? Is double bus ticket on KL- JB route. But at speed of only 140km/ hr
If a high speed rail is introduce, only god knows how much the ticket price will be. 3 or 4 times as much maybe.

140km/hr, 4-5 hr journey to KL is decent. I remember taking the overnight train from Tanjong Pagar to KL a long time ago - 11 hours of sitting on steel straight-backed seats in a crowded noisy train that stopped every hour is a bloody nightmare that swore me off trains forever.

High speed rail is not viable. The exorbitant ticket prices would mean half-empty trains and the state railway operating at massive losses. This is probably the best option for replacing diesel locomotives and maybe even driving (my preferred mode of travelling in Malaysia).

All these aren't important. The most important for Grandpa @glockman is whether he can smoke and have his alcoholic beverages on this long-distance train.

If you take ETS the doors are automatically closed when the train is moving. If you want to smoke you have to travel on laopokai trains and smoke in the gangway where the doors are normally open. But even on ETS I caught some abang smoking in the toilet. The toilet has a small window.

The Japanese Shinkansen used to have smoking cabins but they have since removed them since spring 2024...

I used to take the KTM train from T. Pagar to KL too. Late 1970s to mid 80s. Yes, sitting in the seats was not fun. Hence I booked cabins, two pax to a room. Me and my girlfriend at that time. Cabins only had a sink no toilet. So I trained myself to piss in the sink, also washed face, brushed teeth in the same sink! Most journeys were overnight, and I enjoyed the stops at obscure towns where I would disembark each time, walk around the tracks and station, enjoy the cool morning air, have a smoke and talk to the locals.
