Vietnam Expects Japan Coastguard Ships Next Year: Vice Defence Minister

Vietnam expects to take delivery of coastguard ships from Japan early next year, the country's vice defence minister said on Sunday, as Hanoi looks to boost its defences amid a territorial row with China in the South China Sea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday that Tokyo would provide Southeast Asian nations its "utmost support" in their territorial disputes over the South China Sea, in a speech that received a hostile response from China.

In the South China Sea, scores of Vietnamese and Chinese ships, including coastguard vessels, have continued to square off around a Chinese oil rig in contested waters.

Tensions heightened last week when Hanoi said a Chinese boat rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing vessel not far from the oil rig. China's official Xinhua news agency reported the vessel capsized after "harassing and colliding with" a Chinese fishing boat.

Vietnam Vice Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh told Reuters on Sunday Japan, itself locked in a bitter territorial spat with China, was helping it to train its coastguard and share information with its teams, as well as sending some vessels.

"The process is developing very well and we are planning to receive the ships by early next year," Vinh said in an interview on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia's biggest security forum.

Abe had told parliament on Wednesday that Japan was unable to immediately provide decommissioned patrol ships to Vietnam as its own coastguard was stretched by surveillance activities.

Patrol ships from China and Japan have been playing cat and mouse in waters near disputed East China Sea islets, raising fears of an accidental clash between the world's second- and third-largest economies.

VIETNAM URGES OTHERS TO SPEAK UP

Vinh said that while he welcomed the support of Japan and the United States he believed other nations could be more vocal about China's actions in the South China Sea.

"I have the feeling that every country, whether they publicly state it or not, realise the wrongdoing of China and do not agree with what they are doing," he said.

"I feel that other countries must raise their voice stronger, in a more public way."

Some Southeast Asian nations such as Malaysia have remained wary of speaking out against China for fear of damaging deep-rooted economic ties.

The United States and China squared off at the security forum in Singapore on Saturday, with the U.S. defence secretary accusing Beijing of destabilising the region and a top Chinese general retorting that his comments were a "threat and intimidation".

Vinh said he met with Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of the People's Liberation Army, who stuck to China's "previously stated perspective".

"I told their deputy chief of general staff that Vietnam never wants to have tension with China," he said.

"We do not want to fight to get a winner or loser with them, what we want is peace and territorial sovereignty and integrity."

who is the some? can you name them?

what is their position? red or green?

These Vietcongs really no economic brains.......must be the years of wars screwed up their ability to think clearly.

Before Japan can ship the warships over (and its only coastguard ships, idiots), Vietnam's stock exchange would have dropped 30% and return the country to the stone age and their women folks into cheap prostitutes.

I don't think they care when they burned all those Chinese factories....Vietnam is already living in the stone age...their GDP per cap is 1700 for christsake.

dont worry.. this part of the world has gong cheeebye who will be more then willing to throw away good money after bad. vietnam need to dish out a free trip n some PhD to them as medallions in return, that's all.

Coast guard ships are basically toys without any bite.

just need the russian to outfit with titanium hull it will knock out any ship just like what the russians did to the submarines.

Some of you must be asking if China had made a strategic error in putting the oil rig near disputed sea with Vietcongnam.

It is a master stroke, but yes, China did not foresee the factory burning, but it is ready to attack Vietcongnam if necessary as it had done before and its troops were dispatched on its border with Vietcongnam and 5 ships sent to repatriate its people to safety.

The reason the timing of the oil rig is such is due to Obama's Asia pivot and Japan's increasing involvement, but you will ask why now.

Well, Russia needs China to agree on Ukraine and its 400 billion oil deal needs assurance that Russia will not mess with China's south china sea's interest and knowing Russia and Vietcongnam are in military trade since 2001, China had to put the oil rig there at this moment to test Russia if it will voice anything or not. Of course it will not, as China is a much more important partner than ikan bilis Vietcong shit.

And Russia and Japan has a dispute on the Kurile islands and Japan refuses to negotiate and condemned Putin for role in Ukraine, saying his action is like Hitler.

Hence, if Japan is helping Vietcongnam, it is about time for Russia to go slow with Vietcongnam and slap Japan through China.

China is not afraid of Japan or USA, because in this whole geo-politics, China knows it has Russia in its pocket and that is all that matters for now.

Abe is trying very hard to get ASEAN to fight a proxy war for it.

I think you are mistaken. Its china that is fanning the problem with an arrogant attitude. remeber, just 70 odd years ago, taiwan was under japanese rule. And 500 years ago, when the dutch and portuguese landed in taiwan, there were no chinese, just natives. Give taiwan back to the natives if we want to base everything on history.

By the way, the japs are giving only used coast guard vessels to Vietnam. Its not to fight a war with. But a more robust ship that won't sink when battered by Chinese coast guard vessels.
