Indeed. The Japs have retained much of the essence of traditional Chinese culture from the Han dynasty and Tang dynasty. After the Tang dynasty the Mongols and Manchus invaded, and even the Ming dynasty was founded by a peasant with no culture. Things got worse and worse and eventually the commies took over. Even if the japs did not attack pearl harbour, the japs would retreat troops from china and focus on south east asia as they will be losing on numbers of troops and china is too big to conquer and too many people playing guerrilla warfare.

the Japanese couldn't win the conventional war with inadequate troops. China's guerrilla war could be better, there were many problems like the KMT and CCP didn't cooperate in reality and were fighting each other instead of the Jap invaders. the Japs were not really troubled by the Chinese guerrilla warfare.

if no Pearl Harbor, the war would be a stalemate, it's likely that they would reach a peace pact. whether the Japs would make a full or partial retreat from China is uncertain.

it was the soviets who really put the hurt on the japs in china (manchuria) at the end of the war and practically destroyed the jap kwantung army of over 696k men (over 609k became pows) that factored in the jap's unconditional surrender. during the period when 2 atomic bombs fell on hiroshima and nagasaki, the jap emperor and his retinue of military brass were still contemplating evacuating to manchuria where the bulk of the jap army was. both the kmt and ccp had no means (artillery, tanks, planes, vehicles, etc.) and will to defeat the jap kwantung army in manchuria (ever and at all) although the kmt army had enough numbers of men.

Another thing is their unity among themselves as if it is like them against the world. Their type of behaviour is very prevalent in non Japanese MNCs who have operations in Japan. You can see how the Japs in the head or regional offices close ranks with their counterparts based in Japan.
