have never been held accountable for their war crimes. They lead peaceful lives in their retirement.

It was what i would term as collective punishment. The iraqis have no role in 9/11. But the arabs must be punished somehow. They cannot retaliate against the Saudis where the perpetrators came from. So they needed a bogey. And saddam fitted the bill.
Half the iraqi army wanted to surrender hoping for a new iraq. But US leaders have other ideas. They wanted the country destroyed. And by doing so, created another round of reprisals, hate, suffering.
