Though he and other overseas Chinese fought valiantly against the Japanese, Lim saw a Kuomintang led by China as his motherland, says the writer.

A longer, deeper lens on Singapore's military history should go beyond the overused stories of World War II heroism
In much of post-war South-east Asia, the central role played by militaries in the struggle for independence such as in Indonesia earned the armed forces a place in the national narrative.

For centuries, Vietnamese nationalism drew strength from its past of armed resistance against imperial authority. In the absence of a war of armed resistance to colonial authority, it is perhaps understandable that Singapore's military history draws upon its involvement in British colonial rule as a convenient starting point. There are, however, limits to appropriating Singapore's colonial military history as Singaporean.

Indeed, I came to the same conclusions myself too but I am not fortunate enough to be able to publish them for the whole country to read.

The true Malayan Hero who fought for Singapore with the beliefs that Malaya was his homeland was Lieutenant Adnan Saidi.

In 1942, Adnan led a 42-strong platoon from the Malay Regiment to defend Singapore from the invading Japanese Imperial Army. They fought at Pasir Panjang Ridge in the Bukit Chandu ("Opium Hill") area between 12 and 14 February. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Adnan refused to surrender and urged his men to fight to the end. They held off the Japanese for two days amid heavy enemy shelling from artillery and tanks, as well as chronic shortages of food, medical supplies and ammunition. On the last day of the battle, Adnan and his men were left with only a few grenades and had to fight the Japanese with their bayonets in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Adnan was shot but he continued fighting.

One detail regarding the battle was how Adnan identified Japanese soldiers who were attempting to infiltrate the Malay Regiment's base in disguise as "Punjabi soldiers", who were marching four abreast (Japanese style) instead of three (British style).

Although it is widely understood that Adnan was killed during the Battle of Pasir Panjang, the exact details surrounding his death differed between accounts from both sides of the war. The actual mode of execution was never officially recorded.

The Imperial Japanese Army's official account indicated that Adnan was executed and then hung upside down from a cherry tree after two days of stubborn retaliation and refusal to surrender. (Other accounts suggest that he might have been tied to the tree and repeatedly bayoneted to death.British accounts confirmed that his corpse was found hung upside down after the surrender and this has been repeated in a number of authoritative texts on the Malayan Campaign.

Unlike Lim Bo Seng, LTA Adnan's descendants are more humble and do not go around boosting their ancestry for personal gains & glory.

Lim Bo Seng's loyalty was to China, and he fought for the interests of China. in Singapore back then, the Chinese's loyalty excluding the Peranakans were to China. after ww2 ended, the Chinese carried China flags and portraits of China leader Chiang Kai Shek to celebrate the victory on the streets. it was clear that their loyalties lie with motherland China.

There wasn't any problem of conflict of loyalty then simply because sinkieland didn't exist as a country then.

Even LTA Adnan technically served the British empire not sinkieland or Malaya. He wasn't even a 'Singaporean' aka sinkie to begin with. The same applies to tan tock seng , tan kah keep etc.

This pendatang is still way better than the running dogs who worked shamelessly for the Japanese during the Occupation.
