"It takes a lot of courage to do what is right. At a time when the PAP government knows that it is most vulnerable -- they took the courage to tell us that our country is facing 3 crises in the next 20 years.
As a nation, we are facing:
* Employment peak in 2020 (China as well)
* Population peak in 2025 (China in 2030)
* Aging peak in 2030 (China in 2040)
after the peak is the decline. This means that the onset to our decline is faster. The government can choose to ignore this issue until the time is "right" for them. They chose to tell us now -- even though the political situation is obviously not favorable to them -- so we can start fixing the issue earlier rather than later.
A friend commented "PAP is not even sure they will be voted in in 2016, why should they care about 2030?" -- Precisely. PAP could also have chosen to leave this challenge to the next government who do not have the advantage of experience, but they chose to bite the bullet now because it is the CORRECT thing to do as a responsible government today.
No one knows who will be the government in 2030 (or even 2016), but our current government has enough courage to tell us the truth and sets in motion to solve this problem -- I am thankful to them for that.
Now if we so decide this is NOT the direction that we want our country to go -- then let's exercise our democratic rights and we will deserve the government we voted for. It's only 3 years from now.
