Attempt was made to fly and crash a bomber into a high value target in WWII by remote control with the command and control input from a nearby flying mother ship aircraft. Something went wrong and it blew up before reaching it's target.
Any country can build a remote control aircraft with or without external help. Especially so with the necessity of using propeller engines for range and endurance. Just search youtube for the range of home made giant scale RC aircraft available! The difference between toys and military drones are in the range at which it can be controlled remotely, size comes from the need for attitude(detection prevention) and fuel payload for endurance.
And most importantly of all, the avionics and surveillance technology which can be found only in the most sophisticated of technologically advanced countries. What is being displayed and used is only the fore front of the future when full application of pilot-less fighting aircraft will be the way battles are fought.
Drones that carries and fires a pair of hellfire missiles can only be done in failed states like Iraq and Afghanistan. Try that with Iran.
As for the contention that remote aircraft can be trailed back to their bases of origin, isn't it the case since the dawn of combat aircraft? Well, try to trail the hundreds to a thousand that are heading back after missions in the next war! WWII cost in dollars per flying platform is not the same as in the present and will cost even more in the future!.
