Israel unveils huge drones that can reach Iran
February 22, 2010 - 8:21AM

Israeli soldiers look at an IAI Eitan, also known as the Heron TP, surveillance unmanned air vehicle.

Israel's air force has introduced a fleet of huge pilotless planes that can remain in the air for a full day and fly as far as the Persian Gulf, putting rival Iran within its range.

The Heron TP drones have a wingspan of 26 metres, making them the size of Boeing 737 passenger jets and the largest unmanned aircraft in Israel's military. The planes can fly at least 20 consecutive hours and are primarily used for surveillance and carrying diverse payloads.

At the fleet's inauguration ceremony at a sprawling air base in central Israel, the drone dwarfed an F-15 fighter jet parked beside it. The unmanned plane resembles its predecessor, the Heron, but can fly higher, reaching an altitude of more than 12,000 metres, and remain in the air longer.

"With the inauguration of the Heron TP, we are realising the air force's dream," Brigadier General Amikam Norkin, head of the base that will operate the drones, said on Sunday. "The Heron TP is a technological and operational breakthrough."

Israeli officials refused to say how large the new fleet was or whether the planes were designed for use against Iran, but stressed it was versatile and could adapt to new missions. The plane's maker, state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries, has said it is capable of reaching the Persian Gulf, which would put Iran within its range.

"The Heron TP has the potential to be able to conduct new missions down the line as they become relevant," said Major General Ido Nehushtan, commander of Israel's air force.

Israel believes Tehran is trying to develop nuclear weapons and has repeatedly hinted it could strike Iran if diplomatic efforts to curb the nuclear program fail.

Israeli defence officials said the Heron TP could be a useful tool against Iran, whose leaders have repeatedly called for the Jewish state's destruction. In addition to providing surveillance, the aircraft can jam enemy communications as well as assist in communications between ground control and manned air force planes.

The officials requested anonymity because they were discussing sensitive military technology.

The Heron TP has been in development for about a decade. The aircraft first saw action during Israel's offensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip just over a year ago.

Palestinian witnesses have long claimed Israeli drones fire missiles in Gaza, both before and during the Israeli offensive. Israel has never confirmed its unmanned aircraft can fire missiles.

Israel first began using drones in the early 1970s, and its fleet has steadily increased since then. The unmanned planes are now considered an integral part of the military and tend to accompany air and ground forces on various missions.

Basic problem remains.

Airspace - Israel will have to seek airspace rights to reach Iran.

Size of this slow moving UAV (size of 737) would make it very easy to shoot down

Intel on which site to hit. Iran knows that they can be bombed and have probably dispersed their bomb making sites

Finally, if they put a bomb making site under a women and childrens's hospital with an ophanage next door will anyone dare bomb the place? Pictures of dismembered young girls will inflame the whole Middle East especially if the perpetrator is Israel.

Iran WILL get the bomb. It has the scientists, the $$$, the determination and the knowhow is a 60 year technology. It is either in 3 or 5 or 10 years. But they will get it. The thing is to learn to live with Iran.

Those plane are remote control. Can be hack. If control by the enemy that will be nightmare.

So when is Spore going to get one

We of course don't need them but the scholar generals need the latest & greatest toys to justify their world class pay

I don't know, but these drones are so big that it can carry Nukes Payload.

The funny thing is Israel have nukes themselves, and they are stopping Irans from having nukes...

Isn't it the same case of USA stopping North Korea from having nukes?

Human species is so bent on having wars... what is wrong with humanity?

Especially those who say from their hearts "Thou shalt Not Kill"

here here...

What does 'Thou shall not kill'
in the Ten Commandments MEAN?

Q. I am studying the Ten Commandments. Please explain the Sixth commandment "thou shall not kill."

A. The commandment "thou shall not kill" (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17), is better understood to mean "you shall not murder." Most modern translations of the Bible rendered it this way.

According to the Bible not all killing, the taking of a life, is murder. Murder is the unlawfully taking of human life. The command not to murder applies to human beings, not to killing animals or plant life for food. God gave animals to mankind for his use (Genesis 1:26-30; 9:1-4). But, this does not mean that humans have the right mistreat animals and the environment (Genesis 2:15; Deuteronomy 22:6-7; 25:4; Proverbs 12:10).

Under the Old Covenant God allowed the Israelites to kill other humans under very special circumstances such as punishment for certain sins, for example, murder (Exodus 21:12-14, Leviticus 24:17, 21) and adultery (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22-24). God also allowed the Israelites to engage in warfare and even gave them instructions about waging war (Deuteronomy 20:1-20). God also recognized that humans might accidentally kill each other, and he made provisions for this (Numbers 35:9-34; Deuteronomy 19:1-13).

The primary reason God hates murder is that out of all creation, only human are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:4-6). Even before the codification of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai the murder of other human beings was wrong (Genesis 4:8-12; 4:23-24; 9:4-6; Exodus 1:16-17). While on earth, Jesus spoke out against murder (Matthew 5:21-26; Mark 10:17-19). We also see in the writings of Paul (Romans 1:18, 29-32; 13:8-10; Galatians 5:19-21), James (James 2:8-11; 4:1-3), Peter (1 Peter 4:15-16) and John (Revelation 9:20-21; 21:7-8; 22:14-15) that murder is wrong.

In Matthew 5:21-26 Jesus amplifies the meaning of the sixth commandment. He brings out that to commit murder means more then just killing someone, it means having an angry and unforgiving attitude towards them:

"You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

"Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny." (Matthew 5:21-26, NKJV)

The apostle John elaborates on this by writing that to hate someone is the same as murdering them:

"Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him." (1John 3:15, NKJV).

Murder like all sin, beginnings in the human mind (Matthew 15:18-19; Mark 7:20-23) it starts as a thought, in this case hatred, which leads to the action of murder (James 1:13-15; 4:1-3). The opposite of hating someone is loving them, we should even love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48), seeking not revenge, but looking for ways to help them (Romans 12:17-21).

As we have seen, under the Old Covenant God allowed humans to kill other humans under certain circumstances. But what about today, and those who are now under the New Covenant, should we participate in the execution of a murder or an adulterer? Should Christians involve themselves in warfare? I would argue that Christians should not participate in such activities because the New Covenant is a covenant of life, not of death (2 Corinthians 3:4-11). Under the New Covenant Christians do not execute people for sinning. The most drastic steps anyone can take against an unrepentant Christian are withholding brotherly fellowship from him until he repents (1 Corinthians 5:9-13; 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15); and delivering or handing him over to Satan for spiritual correction (1 Corinthians 5:1-5; 1 Timothy 1:18-20). It is unclear from the scriptures exactly what it means to turn someone over to Satan.

Under the New Covenant a change occurred. Just as Christians are to no longer execute sinners, so they should not wage carnal war, but spiritual warfare (John 18:36; 2 Corinthians 10:1-6; Ephesians 6:10-18; 1 Timothy 1:18-20; 6:11-14; 2 Timothy 2:3-5; 4:6-8). Christians must be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9, Romans 14:19), forgiving those who do them harm (Ephesians 4:29-32; Colossians 3:12-14; Matthew 6:9-15; Mark 11:25-26), treating their enemies with love (Luke 6:27-36) and not seeking revenge (Romans 12:17-21; 1 Peter 3:8-12). Hatred which is the same as murder (1 John 3:15), is unforgiving, vengeful and hostile towards one's enemies.

Special_Atomic_Demolition_Munition_%28carrying_case%29.jpg

Carrying case for the W54 Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM), the smallest nuclear warhead produced by the United States between 1964 and 1988. The SADM had a yield of 0.01, or 0.02-1 kiloton, very low by most nuclear weapons standards but still very powerful in human terms. The entire unit weighed less than 163 pounds (74 kilograms).

What the West feared most are these miniaturised tactical nukes because they can be easily concealed and transported, maybe even by DHL or UPS right to the frontdoors of 1600 Penn. Ave or 10 Downing St. Even if it failed to explode, the radiations will kill thousands in a populated area.

Miniaturisation technologies are consistently being better researched and mordernised, soon these mini nukes will be the size of LV bags. Size really doesn't matter in this equation.

Israel will not use theirs unless the very existence of their State Of Israel is at stake. There is no ambiguity here.

many of these alibaba nukes are missing after the collapse of soviet union....

hmm...i wonder where they are....

SADM%28cropped%29.jpg

In 1997, former Russian National Security Advisor Alexander Lebed made public claims about lost "suitcase nukes" following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In an interview with the newsmagazine 60 Minutes, Lebed said:

I'm saying that more than a hundred weapons out of the supposed number of 250 are not under the control of the armed forces of Russia. I don't know their location. I don't know whether they have been destroyed or whether they are stored or whether they've been sold or stolen, I don't know.[citation needed]

This is VERY INEFFECTIVE and actually lame threat to Iran.

A slow drone like this if flow from Israel to Iran will only have very little time to spy before it had to rush back after it arrived. The time, fuel and distance spent over long journey is MANY TIMES compared against the useful spying round over intended target area.

It is slow and non-tactical as well as very easy to be detected and destroyed. It also cost too much. It is easy to detect and destroy because it is the size of 737 and it runs on WW2 era propellers.

If you used it as a raid platform it's payload is also too little.

This is NOT the correct way to make and use drones, and the Israelis will have to know it better. The Iranians will laugh it off, if they wanted to they can also build a fleet of these.

Basically in terms of today's technology it is very easy to make any form of unman and guided vehicles to reach a very long distance. Besides satellites there are actually many ways to guide and navigate them. Civilian technologies are sufficient to achieve it and won't really cost too much. There are actually cheap and dirty way to make your own cruise missiles driven by propellers & commercial engines & simple airframes. Even ground vehicle engines can be used such as cars' or even trucks. You can use laptops, GPS, mobile broadband, GSM, google earth, etc resources. You don't really need very high-tech nor very high performance. As long as it works.

A couple of university / poly students is sufficient to pull it off, and you won't need half a million dollars. :) You won't even need half a year. There are farmers in PRC who made their own aircraft and fly around as hobby. To make unman plane fly is actually easier than unman road vehicles because there is no obstacles in the air, once you are airborne to few hundred meters. The easiest is unman boats, as it is really only 2 dimensional and relatively free of obstacles.

Very funny. What is the point if the plane can reach Iran. Iran have thouand of rockets that can reach Israel.

Design ofthe plane become more basic very much look like WWII aircraft only different is remote control.

Many of these UAV are controlled by Satellites directly above. So it is hard to jam. Problem is that big countries have ability to take down your satellite and or have their own satellited to track these UAVs.

Basically that is correct. The ideal airframe have to very similar with gliders. That is the simplest airframe that can stay airborne & naturally keeping it's head forward. This makes the control rather simple.

Some modern fighter jets e.g. F-16 or SU-47 (swept wing) airframe are unnatural airframes that requires complex computing and controls to kept them flying. These airframes will easily fall tumbling off the sky during engine trouble or computer faults.

Drones are semi-robots that flies.

One day we will see flying robots killing each other during wars. Basically the best way to defend against drones is to deploy other drones to detect and tail and destroy them.

If you tracked these US drones on their return trips you can kill their base and their base crews also.;) These guys tot that they are remote and safe? Their drones will lead enemies back to them, and they won't dream of it.:p

Hello. no one in this world now. Have the balls to strike a US bases, at least no country dare to, but of course insurgent and taliban which have no country dare to, but they know where the US air bases are, hundreds of flight in and out for logistics. They are well protected.

only the maintenance crew are in middle east, the pilot are in Arizona USA, safety tuck away in their huge wooden house.
