This has been on-going problem for decades and the custodians of Islam are not doing any favours when they allow cruelty to animals that cannot speak or defend themselves to suffer to such an extent. This expose by the Australians of the practices of abattoirs in Indonesia is not confined to that part of the world but pretty widespread where volumes are involved.

When Mohammed spelled out this edict, it was to serve 2 purposes both absolutely important. One was to seek understanding for the taking of a life for food via a prayer and the second is to ensure that it will be as painless and humane as possible with a single clean cut. A practice that was never codified in a specific form in any other religion. Ahead of its time and truly an altruistic canon.

The chief scientist of RSPCA Australia having watched the footage found that on average it took 11 cuts to the neck to kill the poor animal. Mind you we are talking about average here. The sight of an animal trembling in fear as it was watching the slaughter of its kind right in front of it was truly shocking.

There has been some outrage expressed by Muslims leaders but few and nothing that treats this as serious. They were more outraged over the expose by the Australians.

Islam will continue to be dragged in the m&d not because it is a poor religion but because the ignorance of its minders and professed custodians who are essentially poorly educated, politically adventurers and essentially opportunitists

This does not only concern the custodians and religious leaders of this faith but every muslim that has a brain and sense of moral fibre running thru his spine. Do know that everyone's eye is on you. You remain quiet and you may continue with your lifestyle but when you head to the mosque every Friday, one wonders what actually goes thru your mind. Keep quiet and everyday becomes a wasted day.

THE federal government has decided to suspend the export of all live cattle to Indonesia, following a public outcry and a threatened backbench revolt.

The Agriculture Minister, Joe Ludwig, signed the order last night and said the ban would stay in place until safeguards had been adopted that would ensure the proper treatment of the beasts along the whole supply chain.

The decision to suspend the $318 million-a-year-industry was taken by cabinet on Monday night and has the potential to upset the Indonesians, the cattle industry and the federal opposition, all of which have argued against a blanket ban.

Indonesia's treatment of Australian cattle is making some local consumers think twice about tucking into that steak.

"What you saw on the program would not happen in an Australian abattoir," Mr Maguire said, referring to the ABC program that aired on Monday May 30. "The appalling cruelty that occurred is against Australian law."

Mr Maguire said Australian abattoirs have fully audited systems with animals stunned prior to slaughter.

The Gillard government late yesterday responded to public anger by announcing it would ban all live cattle exports to Indonesia until appropriate animal welfare safeguards are in place.

Indications of an economic fallout from the decision are appearing with major beef producer Australian Agricultural Company today entering a trading halt on the Australian stock exchange as the company examines the statement on the effect on it of the ban on live beef shipments to Indonesia.

"We're very supportive of what the federal government has done because it's allowing us to get around the table and hopefully restore some community confidence in the industry," said Mr Maguire.

Despite the reported fall in meat sales, major supermarkets chain Woolworths said it had seen no difference in meat demand since the revelations were made public.

"It appears Australian consumers have made the distinction between that which is exported to Indonesia and that which is completely home grown," said spokesman Benedict Brook.

Wesfarmers-owned Coles was not immediately available for comment.
Market diversion

The cattle industry itself expects massive flow-on effects from the ban on live cattle exports to Indonesia, including a possible drop in prices as animals intended for exports end up in local markets.

Central Queensland grazier Melinee Leather said northern producers will be forced to compete with their southern counterparts.

She said they’ll have to fork up to $200 per head of cattle in transporting their stock to southern feedlots for the domestic and other international markets already covered by other producers.

‘‘The markets will be flooded because we have a percentage of northern cattle that used to go live and now have to go somewhere else,’’ Ms Leather told AAP.
‘‘It’s going to impact on the entire Australian beef industry and communities.’’
She said 1200 Queensland jobs depended on the export industry which rakes in about $350 million in national revenue and Indonesia is the country’s third-largest market.

Rick Britton, the mayor Boulia in Queensland’s central west, said the ban will send some beef producers out of business.

‘‘We’ve just come out of a 10-year drought where people were financially strapped trying to keep their core breeders alive,’’ Mr Britton said.
