[h=1]SURVEY: 40% OF LOWER PRIMARY CHILDREN NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP[/h]
Post date:
5 Feb 2015 - 1:22pm

According to a study conducted by students from the Nanyang Technological University 4 in 10 lower primary school kids are not getting enough sleep.

The study was conducted in collaboration with NUH and compared the number of hours of sleep children got with the recommended hours for children of that age.
Children in lower primary school should be getting 9 to 10 hours of sleep a day for healthy brain development but most students here only sleep 8 hours.
The survey took responses from over 300 respondents including parents and children aged 6 to 9 years old.

37% did not have a regular bed time while 35% also didn’t have a regular bedtime routine.

Due to the lack of quality sleep, the survey found that many kinds fall asleep on public transport, in class, while watching tv or similar.
In the end, their concentration levels during the day are affected.

For the children who reported feeling this way during the day, 75% said they watched TV before sleeping while 60% said they used smartphones. 30% said they used the computer for up to an hour before bed.

Activities such as these before bed promote mental activity and can affect the quality of sleep as the mind cannot switch off effectively.

The study found that often, children’s behaviours reflect that of their parents.

It was also concerning that despite 4 in 10 children not getting enough sleep and many more missing out on quality sleep, 90% of parents said that they did not feel their children had sleeping problems.

Parents should look out for signs of sleep deprivation in their children, such as a lack of concentration, drop in school performance, irritability and frustration at the slightest provocation as well as spontaneously falling asleep when sitting down or watching TV.

Kids these days are also being deprived of time to daydream, to watch the sea waves or a sunset.

Sure, maybe that is why when these Sinkie kids do grow up and reached their early 20s they laze around and bump around and never want to find a job which they deem are too laborious, due to their need to 'catch up' on some sleep which they did not get in their earlier lives! LoL

Yeah, daft enough to get drafted into NS. And then get called daft thereafter by the old man.

going to watch the waves or sunset won't help the kids to get an "A" in maths or science. :o

its a pity we have devolved to this.
