There are cameras that are good for portraiture. There are cameras that are suited for for action photography. There are cameras that perform very well in low light and there are cameras that are perfectly designed for taking holiday snapshots.

Which camera is "good" depends entirely on what sort of photographs you're going to take.

Yup. If you want to take upskirts pics, a pen cam or phone cam will also so.

But if you want to photograph models, then get a medium format.

bro sam, dun get so worked up! we all know you are expert in photography stuff. the model i mentioned is retailing at $399, i remember seeing canon ixus at $600+ last year. so i think that this may be a good buy.

A good buy has nothing to do with the price. It's all about getting a camera that suits your needs.

A camera can cost $200 but if it can't do what you want, that's money down the drain.

On the other hand, a $400 camera that does an excellent job of taking the sort of pictures you bought it for is $400 well spent.

It is the person behind the camera....you can get a solid DSLR with a $20,000 lens...but the person behind, can only shoot in auto mode!!

You are right...what you want & then work on the budget, buying a camera with that budget that serves your need.

He owns a D3s which has only taken about 10 images since he bought it a year ago.

It's also about good artistic composition in the hands of someone who can recognise a great potential in the scene before him.

Photography is painting with light.

A $200 cam in good hands can yield stunning shots. Whereas a $10,000 cam in a pointshooter is a bloody waste of money.

The Lumix brand is a premium brand and that is a good camera.

It has 25mm wide angle, 8x optical zoom, 14.1mp, you can't go wrong with the Lumix brand.

When I bought my camera years ago I was also puzzled by what to buy.
What is a good camera ? My criteria was more simple than Sams.

I finally choose a Canon Powershot S50 because it was fast. For some cameras there is a delay between each shot. Back then Sony compact cameras were really slow.

The max number of shots you can take before recharging the batteries.

How good can a camera reproduce colors. Canon cameras have a good reputation for capturing skin tones colors.

I was also looking for the ability to save in RAW format. Didn't use this capability useful at all, since I only take recreational photos

The model I choose had the ability to set things manually. Believe it or not you have to pay $$$ for this capability Back when I was looking around for a camera, the Lumix camera shot very good pictures but alot of the settings were too automatic & I didn't like the large form factor.

One thing you should be looking at is the quality of the lens. The Leica lens on the Lumix is good but what about the CCD? Having a high megapixel is useless if you can't capture all that info. When you blow up the prints you'll see greater detail if you have a good CCD.

The current Canon S95($669) which is a compact with a high sensitive CCD. If it's within your budget use this as your standard of comparison. I paid $1,000 for my 5 megapixel camera which I'm still using today

Shooting in RAW is a godsend if you need to correct all the errors you made during the shoot!:p I use RAW all the time.

If you're on the run and want to record your journey, megapixels aren't important and neither are all those fancy features you're paying for but won't use.

As a fugitive, you should choose a camera with a long battery life as you may not have the opportunity to charge the battery very often.
