is there an invisible flaw in our education system?

Who is the guy who topped LKY in school? I think he is the guy we are looking for.

LKY is a true politician in every sense of the word. He is able to garner the support of the masses, influence the business sectors, press, military, foreign investors, and other peoples to his side. And keep enemies down. Even is someone is better than him academically, is that person a more capable politician?

hmm... the bulk of the Chinese masses are non-English speaking. no doubt old man spoke Malay fluently. question is: would he be able to garner enough votes without the help of Lim Chin Siong? guess no one would know :o:o:o

LKY is as capable a politician as Kim Jong-Il. That's all I'm gonna say :)

But that is how meritocracy has been measured today in Singapore. I am not qualified to answer this question. I guess if it fits the purpose it is. If it does not it is not. If you say galvanizing the masses is the mark of a politician, then Lim Chin Siong was the consummate politician, more so than the Old Man, except he did not get the support of the Brits.

Left to the present gahmen, they will tailor the education system to meet the needs of big foreign investors. Hence technical skills and math were focused. History and Geography have been omitted. Regionally, also "mother" tongue - for commerce. Education of the nation comes from society too. And this is where many parents in Sg have relied too much on the school and tuition. In Sg, there is this you or me situation, not a one-for-all and all-for-one mindset, which nobody seems concerned about so long as I am better of than you and this year I take a more expensive vacation than last year. Nation building? I don't see this word in the official media anymore, now, the focus is on individual entrepreneurs who have made big money.

Arts. Is there a local scene? Maybe that's not possible because there isn't a common social binder. I would say that the national common binder would have been NS. But that's temporary, and the military is still run by insiders. Citizens only serve.

Cheers!

i hope the HAPPINESS INDEX of bhutan has somewhat awaken our gov. for those who might ve visted bhutan, children from very young are very well-mannered. when u r there, u feel certain tranquility and nobility of the land. though it would be impractical for singapore for be like that but our education must take a real hard look to prevent future generation who might be the "richest" in the world but with eroded civil-mindedness.

i just want my kids to be good adults and not rich bad ones.

francis seow who is now in political assylum in USA and who was reported with much notoriety. whether true, false or exaggerated, it isn't important anymore. he's already passe.

the gov now needs to take a good hard look at our education and seriously realise the type of citizens the system is churning out. they could be planting a time-bomb for the future themselves when they stress too much on materialistic wealth at the expenses of moralistic values.

I suppose we could only rely on what printed matter we could lay our hands on about that past. When it was happening, I was still swimming in my daddy's scrotum. My guess is that the power that be then (the Brits) could not deny Malaya and other colonies their aspirations to be independent, but at the same time did not want Crown Jewel Singapore and oil-rich Brunei to fall into a possible extreme Islamic Federation (Tengku was a moderate, and definitely anti-commie). For Sg, the choice for them was LKY or Marshall. Between the two, the locals definitely would not want that Semite to rule them. As for Lim Chin Siong, Toh Chin Chye, Keng Swee and others, they were not an equal match to old Harry on one-to-one basis. This is my guestimate of the time.

Cheers!

This one easy to answer. Meritocracy in Sg is judged by how one appeals to the regime.

Old Harry was the Brits' choice.

Cheers!

I haven't been to Bhutan, but it is sparsely populated - lots of land for each individual. Somehow (for me) gazing at a natural horizon where the sky meets the land/sea is therapuetic. It makes me feel at peace, soft, relaxed. Not the kind of feeling when I se the sky meets buildings. Human architecture is harsh to the senses. In this, all cities can never bring the same kind of happiness as rural or agrarian societies. For almost all, money is the pathway to happiness. My very Christian friend once told me that city living is not good. Well, we can't help it, we have to look for happiness somewhere; if not without, then within.

Yes. I too just want my kid to grow up normal. Have friends, meaningful job.

Cheers!

Meritocracy is judged by whoevers that is more influential the one is linked with (or leeched onto).

would woody be anywhere if peanut lady didn't have good connection? the flow process is: wood links nutz and nutz links dead lizard :p and lizard links... and the rest was history.

hmm....maybe our education system should teach the ART OF LINKING.
