This is because the problems on the ground are like in your face and they can't seem to mask it anymore. Just take a look at the cpf, housing, cheap wage, over crowding, jobless rate ,old age, low birth rate .... Please add on the list seems to be non exhaustive, the shit will hit the fan when the property bubble bursts and it rains on those who over paid for their homes
