SINGAPORE - A nine-year-old Singaporean girl from Raffles Girls' Primary School, has gotten her first taste of Mount Everest and now has set her sights on being the youngest Singaporean to conquer the mountain in the future.
In May, Minnal K. Dhayalan trekked nearly 100km over eight days with her parents, to reach the 5,364m-high Everest base camp in Nepal, The Straits Times reported.
The family hiked between 10km and 15km each day with the help of three local guides and two porters.
It is unknown if she is the youngest Singaporean to reach the base camp as no such records have been kept. However, Mr Yip Seck Hong, 64, president of the Singapore Mountaineering Federation, believes that she is one of the youngest that he has heard of.
Mountaineer David Lim, 48, who led the Singapore Everest expedition in 1998, told The Straits Times that Minnal's climb is a feat.
The minimum age to attempt the Everest climb in Nepal is 16.
Minnal's adventure begin when her mother, IT software consultant Kiruthika Chidambaram, 40, decided that she wanted to climb the Himalayas and approached her family.
With her husband and daughter game for the challenge, they trained by climbing Mount Panti and Mount Ophir in Malaysia last year.
